On Our Radar: Garden Gnomes, Food Trucks, Fashion Shows and More

The annual Calgary Home + Garden Show starts this week where young professionals will get to learn the best new trends for the season, pick up a few great gardening tips, and meet the experts who will have notable advice for making your place look great this spring and summer. This year’s presenters will include HGTV’s Bryan Baeumler and Tommy Smyth along with a handful of Calgary’s most experienced designers and trades people. Doors open Thursday, and to kick off the event in style, there will be a 7pm fashion show at the main stage. The Style Guys will be showing off the best fashion of the season using local models.

This year the lounge is being styled by Calgary’s Alykhan Veliji. The theme is ‘salvaged’ and will incorporate repurposed designs into the chic space where people are invited to sip and nosh between viewing exhibits. Foodies will also be excited to know that some of the best YYC food trucks in town will be rolling up for the event and parking just outside the Corral. This year you’ll have the chance to sample delicious treats from Waffles and Chix, Sticky Ricky’s, Shogun, Fiasco Gelato and Mighty Skillet. If you haven’t tried the fried chicken poutine from Waffles and Chix, then you absolutely must stop there for a snack. Beer lovers are encouraged to come check out the beer gardens and enjoy a pint in the manicured surroundings. You’ll almost feel like you’re sipping a lager on a patio with all the greenery around you.

One of the coolest parts of this year’s show is the Better Gnomes and Gardens project. The highly respected Chelsea Flower Show, which has been called the “garden equivalent of the Kentucky Derby,” finally decided to lift a century-long ban on garden gnomes during their 2013 show. Previously thought to be too kitschy for green space, the lawn gnome will be an honoured guest at this year’s show when local Calgary personalities will use their design skills to turn simple lawn gnomes into stylish garden accessories. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on these gnomes with all the proceeds going to Grow Calgary, the largest urban garden of its kind in Canada.

The Home + Garden show will be held at the BMO Centre and the Corral Stampede Park from Thursday, February 27th to Sunday, March 2nd. For more information on hours, tickets and parking, click here
