On Our Radar: Calgary International Salsa Congress

While most Calgarians thaw out from a cold winter, hundreds of local dancers prepare for the hottest weekend in Calgary – The Calgary International Salsa Congress.

Local instructors Kelly Lannan and Eric Caty of Alberta Dancesport and Salsa Rica Productions, as well as David and Olga Joseph of Dando Dance Company, are bringing this one-of-a-kind international event to Calgary for its sixth year running from April 4-7 at the Hyatt Regency.

The team had been travelling around the world performing as a part of the International Congress organization, and realized that Calgary’s local dance community could benefit by experiencing a worldwide event such as this. Since shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars hit the air, enrollment in dance classes have increased.

Bringing top artists from around the world, this festival showcases Calgary and the large community of Calgarians involved in salsa dancing. Impressively, there are over 100 performers and competitors just from Calgary taking part in the event.

Each evening will feature performances by local dance troupes, and will be capped off by the international showcase. The fun thing about this show is that, unlike most other shows, the evening finishes with a huge dance fiesta open to spectators and dancers alike. Last year more than 1000 spectators enjoyed the event, so it’s a sure bet that this year will be a lot of fun.
