On Our Notable Radar: The Return of Street Food City

We’re always on the lookout for unique, community-driven events that justify ditching the desk during the day for a bit… and next week, we’ve found the perfect excuse to leave your lunch at home and head out for an hour of food-driven fun.

Street Food City 2 is almost upon us (running from January 23rd to 27th) and coincides nicely with another notable food-centric event. Back for its second year, this festival unites a nice little collection of Vancouver’s celebrated food trucks at one prime location: the Vancouver Art Gallery, and calls for a brief pause in that New Year health-kick you might be on.

Adding to the flavourful mix, this year’s event is offering up plenty of reasons to stick around for seconds with live music, pop-up tenting and bistro-style seating (and even heat to ward off winter’s chilly temps). It all guarantees a festive feel we think is worth noting.

Look for more than a dozen different purveyors of deliciousness who’ll be on hand to dish out their goods. We’ve sourced our must-try picks below and urge you to duck out for a little curb-side culinary adventuring of your own.

Craving comfort food? Look no further than Mom’s Grilled Cheese for a gooey-good fix. Featuring everything from a slight deviance on the classic (The Jackson 3) to the Fat Elvis (grilled peanut butter and banana, just like the King liked it), to something beyond decadent: meatloaf grilled cheese. Alternatively, you can choose your own fixings; satisfaction is notably guaranteed.

Another truck making an appearance at Street City Food 2 is Holy Perogy, one of our favourites. Get there early if you can as they usually sell out. They feature a wide selection of different Ukrainian favourites stuffed with different ingredients served alongside inventive toppings. Try their Italian perogies served with tomato salsa, sour cream, a drizzle of olive oil and pesto (of course), Mexican-inspired perogies and traditional varieties. Be sure to load up on the fried onions and other toppings.

Also be sure to check out the Guanaco Food Truck offerings for a tasty, El Salvadorian treat. They’re offering gluten-free, authentic corn tortillas (pupusas) filled with veg or meat options, antojitos and pastels (appetizers). All are handmade and stuffed with delectable ingredients. On our must-eat list: the yucca frita, ayote and tamales will more than satisfy.
