Nuit Blanche 2014: Calgary’s Very Own ‘White Night’

It’s back—and it’s exactly what you you’ve been waiting for.

And no, despite the name, we’re not talking about the snow. In fact, Nuit Blanche is one of the hottest nights of the year.

First introduced to Calgary in 2012, the evening event drew more than 10,000 people to Olympic Plaza and City Hall as both spaces were transformed into full-scale public art galleries for over eight hours.

This year, with an expectation of 20,000+ attendees, they have doubled the artist roster from six to over twelve, bringing in both local and international artists with pieces ranging from demonstrations to installations, to those that you can participate in yourself.

And what’s more exciting than acting in a live art demonstration in front of thousands of people?

We know—nothing.

It’s not all about this one night, though. The Nuit Blanche Calgary Society produces artist installations year-round, including site-specific pilot projects. Just look to December 2011, when Sarah Smalik presented Predator Prayer in collaboration with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at Jack Singer Hall if you want to know how good these can be.

Original performance artworks presented at NBC have even gone on to tour internationally. In fact, the NBC commissioned project, CLOUD by Caitlind Brown and Wayne Garrett has been presented in Moscow, Prague, Chicago, and other cities around the world to great acclaim.

This “one-night-only” transformative celebration of creativity in downtown Calgary is something that YPs don’t want to miss, especially those looking for a little reminder of home-sweet-home.
