Banff recently welcomed a new kid to the block, and while it’s too soon to tell if it’s more like Jonathan or Jordan, it is safe to say this new restaurant is sure to make your night.
Block Kitchen + Bar is a trendy new tapas bar that offers a fresh urban setting with birdcages and bare bulb lighting hanging from the ceiling, as well as wine bottles anchored to the wall and copper trimmings lined throughout.
An unlikely trio, local Banffites Andy Burke (entrepreneur), Chris Beecroft (construction) and Jay Ahn (hospitality) teamed up their areas of expertise to open this intimate space serving up a mostly Mediterranean-Asian-inspired menu. The warm, rustic space offers a fun, playful vibe. It’s the perfect place to hit up for a cocktail, some tapas, or a full meal.
Renowned chef Stephane Prevost brings years of experience (former chef of a Banff favourite called Typhoon) to the kitchen. The menu is bursting in variety, from the staple edamame to sake-infused kinpira, along with a crowd-pleaser cheese and charcuterie board as well as grilled scallops and much more.
Notable fact: All tables are handcrafted by Leader Services and Renovations, and if you join all tables together, they make up one tree. The interior features lots of other handcrafted timber, including the drink menu, hostess stand and waiter’s station.
With such a superb location and even better menu, Block has become a frequent hot spot for Banff young professionals. Not too bad for just a few weeks time. For your next night out with friends, stroll on in for a cocktail or bite to eat. We suggest you try the Asian lettuce wraps or the signature watermelon cocktail.
The wine, beer and spirits selection is vast, serving up some harder-to-find liquors alongside rotating weekly featured draught beer, which has become a big hit with locals.
The full dinner menu is served until 10pm, with the late night menu kickin’ around until 1am with cocktails, wine and beer keeping the party going for another hour or so. Whether it’s a full dinner you’re after or just late evening nibbles and cocktails, Block is sure to appeal to your appetite.
