Notable VINTAGES for the Holidays: Chateau Pontet Canet 2010

Whether you’re indulging your own taste buds or want to make a splash at your fifth holiday party of the week, we have an insider’s opinion on the best bottles you can buy this festive season.

Last week we told you about our favourite Italian red, while today we’re heading to France for a fantastic medium-bodied and fruity Bordeaux, Château Pontet-Canet 2010 (259473 (XD) 750 mL $249.85).

‘Cause the holidays, in their most traditional sense, represent all that is good on earth.

And a perfect bottle of Bordeaux for the holiday dinner table definitely falls under that umbrella.

Here’s why you’ll love it:

– If you’ve heard of just one wine region in France, we’re willing to bet it’s Bordeaux. And there’s a good reason for that: its wines are rich with history and synonymous with prestige and excellence.

– Dismiss traditional perceptions: if you’ve been less inclined to reach for a blend than a single-varietal wine, let this shining example prove that red blends can be the finest expressions of winemaking in the world.

– This wine was awarded 100 points by the world’s most famous wine critic, Robert Parker. That’s perfect for those of you keeping score.

– And here are a few choice words Robert Parker has for this wine: “Astounding”, “simply remarkable to behold and experience”, “it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this.” Tell us what you really think, Mr. Parker.

– It’s a classic Bordeaux blend, consisting of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, with dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the balance. The bouquet unleashes aromas of crème de cassis along with an array of floral notes. The palate is fresh, full-bodied, massively rich, but not heavy or overbearing. Absolutely remarkable, in other words.

– Be aware: drinking wine from such an acclaimed vintage is a privilege every young professional should experience.

Be sure to check back next week as we continue to run down our top recommendations from VINTAGES’ impressive holiday wine selection.
