Notable Restaurant: The Drake 150, Two Ways

A juxtaposition of its humble beginnings – the original Drake Hotel synonymous with local artistry and mainstream rejection – here lies the new location in Canada’s epicenter of capitalism… but it works

The Drake: a motley crew of Toronto cultural experiences. So much more than a hotel, Torontonians have enjoyed The Drake’s thoughtful, yet rapid, expansion into retail, art, culture and dining experiences over the past three years. While its original location in the city’s soul on Queen West continues to soar in popularity, now the brand has cemented its new position in the financial district with the opening of a sister restaurant – The Drake 150 (150 York Street).  A juxtaposition of its humble beginnings – the original Drake Hotel synonymous with local artistry and mainstream rejection – here lies the new location in Canada’s epicenter of capitalism… but it works.

Every good brand needs a differentiator, and The Drake’s is undoubtedly STYLE. Similar to it’s predecessor, The Drake 150 delivers. The aesthetics of the venue are a feast for the eyes. Art deco married with contemporary raw elements provides an impressive atmosphere. It’s fun but first class. A well-lit bar set against the backdrop of glittering office towers has sex appeal, though the bustling crowd of stilettos and suits help.

The ambience is the true star, the food taking a back seat. While classic bistro-style menu items are available, the options are unadventurous, the food good enough for the corporate credit card but not enough to be the draw. The options available for snacks and sharing are appealing. You can’t go wrong with flatbread, olives or meatballs. The main course offerings are schizophrenic, ranging from pizzas, to oysters, to beef tartar, to whole chickens. For him, the pickerel. The portion and presentation impressive, but slightly overcooked. For her, the ricotta gnocchi, large enough for a big appetite, acceptable in quality but no comparison to what you would find in a true Italian restaurant. The wine and cocktail list is vast – something for every price point and pallet.

Whether intentional or not, The Drake’s expansion and cumulative collection of venues has articulated the brand of Toronto at the same time that they have grown their own household name. The “hotbed for culture,” The Drake’s slogan, is now that much more complete; bridging art and corporate, their brand now captures the complete culture spectrum of Toronto. And it’s all done in good design and impeccable taste.

His rating:
For a Business Meeting: 8/10. Located in the heart of downtown, it’s a quick hop from the office and delivers something for everyone. The bustle makes it hard to have too serious of a conversation, but definitely add this spot to your list of options for when the right client is in town.

With a Group: 7/10. Good spot, but teetering on the edge of too corporate. Make a reservation. It’s required.

On a Date: 8/10. There is something about this place that sets the mood, but be prepared to run into someone you know while there. This place is hopping.

Her rating:
For a Business Meeting: 9/10. Especially for those out of town clients who are looking for a true snapshot of what Toronto is all about. The powerful atmosphere impresses.

With a Group: 8/10. Get your girls, put on your best shoes, and request one of the semi-round banquettes.

On a Date: 6/10. Dates are better off of the beaten path.

His last word: Kudos to The Drake franchise on another successful expansion. You do the city proud.
Her last word: To really show an out-of-towner what Toronto is all about, do both locations in one night.
