Notable Radar: Week of January 30, 2012

We’ve got a few things that have recently caught our attention pertaining to YVR’s constantly evolving culinary scene…

Opening soon
Opening sometime next month and joining a neat little run of restaurants along South Granville is Siena. Coming to us from well-known Vancouver sommelier and owner of Cru Restaurant, Siena aims to offer a more laid-back (après shopping) spot for us to get our Italian comfort food fix in the heart of all the action. You’ll eventually find it at 1485 W 12th Ave. at South Granville.

Just opened
Several sweet spots have just opened around town that we think are definitely worth noting. Let’s start with the brightly-coloured, open-concept Cadeaux Bakery (172 Powell Street), which officially unlocked its doors last week, allowing us in to their quaint and deliciously-scented bakery in Gastown. We bee-lined it for the stack of fluffy croissants (clearly a weakness of ours), and grabbed a coffee to help chase it down.  There’s plenty more baked options for all your sweet tooth cravings: caramel brownies with sea salt, freshly baked brioche, tarts, cakes and cookies galore. This spot is guaranteed to be a hit when you need a post-shopping sugar fix.

Next, if you find yourself meandering through Coal Harbour, be sure to stop by the newly-minted macaron-filled home of Soirette for a taste of Parisian pleasure. We recently noticed this sweet little bake shop had popped up at 1433 W. Pender and could hardly wait to taste our way through their macaron menu featuring nearly 20 different flavours. For starters, might we suggest the Caramel Fleur de Sel, or perhaps their delicate floral-themed Lavender, Rose or Jasmine? Passionate owner Shobna Kannusamy brings oodles of inventiveness to her cheerful cafe. For a limited time, she’s even created a deliciously decadent dark chocolate and mandarin macaron in celebration of Chinese New Year. Soirette might just be our new go-to place to pop by for quick client meetings. They serve coffee and specialty tea creations as well and offer customized creative macaron services, perfect for gifting or events worth noting.
