Cos & Effect 2012 (August 24 – 26)
Takes place at UBC this weekend and is one of Vancouver’s best annual alternative fashion conventions geared toward the 20-something crowd of creatives. A variety of panels feature topics up for discussion and debate (Convention Horror Games, FX Make-up, Masquerade Dance lessons, Convention stories and Alternative Fashion and the Professional Workplace are a few chats to be had). This creatively-fuelled convention allows attendees the chance to connect with like-minded fans as they take in events, fashion shows, a Cosplay Music Video Contest, Final Fantasy Flight Tournament and more.  There are also informative workshops, an Artist’s Alley, and dealer’s hall to peruse.

LIVE at Squamish (42099 Loggers Lane, Squamish, BC)
This weekend marks the return of one of BC’s best multi-day outdoor concerts: LIVE at Squamish is back and promises to be better and bigger than ever with a great lineup of some of the biggest names in music today. Catch acts such as Lights, City & Colour, Chomeo and all-time Canadian favourite The Tragically Hip. The venue doesn’t get much better than what is offered at LIVE: stunning coastal scenery, the Pacific Ocean and the monumentious Chief help set the stage.

MEC Summer Classic Run Race (3941 Point Grey Road at Jericho Beach)
Join hundreds of other Vancouverites for this annual MEC-sponsored run alongside the beach in Kitsilano-Point Grey. Open to runners of all abilities and age, this fun-spirited race starts at 9am and features a 5km and 10km course. Drinks and snacks are provided and there are prizes to be won. Race fee is $15.

CNIS presents An African Market (August 25th at 1985 West Broadway)
This weekend, if you’re looking to do a bit of good and enjoy experiencing the infectious sights, flavours and sounds of Africa, be sure to stop by the African Market to benefit the Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS) for a day of cultural fun for a great cause. On the agenda for this free event (starting at noon until 6pm): music, dance, fashion, craft, art, food and more. All proceeds will go directly to helping assist CNIS ensure that safe medical care, training and surgery are provided in African communities.

Coming up: Diner en Blanc (August 30th, Vancouver, place TBD)
For a lucky few thousand Vancouverites who managed to make the list of this much anticipated ‘white party’, Diner en Blanc will literally materialize in town for a few hours next week. Renowned as the ultimate summer pop-up picnic party around the world, this is the first time DEB has made a stop on the West Coast. Attendees are expected to take over a notable space in Vancouver, clad all in white attire (down to the table, chairs and linens).

Last chance: Food Cart Festival at The Waldorf Hotel (ends September 2nd)
If you haven’t already had the opportunity, be sure to save your Sunday appetite and pay a visit to this popular food cart festival that celebrates the collective goods offered by our food carts. Have fun sampling your way through the lineup of some of our city’s tastiest offerings from an array of popular street-side chefs. The Juice Truck, Pig on the Street, Cartel Taco, Ernest Ice Cream and lots more will be in attendance. Stop by the on-site beer garden for a cold one to wash it all down. Find it at 1489 E.
