Notable Now Toronto: May 2, 2014

Cinco de Mayo
Date: Really?
Location: Everywhere

You might not be aware, but the 5th of May is actually celebrated because of a decisive Mexican military victory over the French way back in 1862. Of course, we’ve somehow managed to reduce it to simply eating and drinking all things Mexican. But hey, a young professional has to eat and Mexican is one of our favourite dishes. Check out the weekend long party at El Caballito, or hit up Fonda Lola on Monday night for a French twist on the traditional Mexican day.

Tie One On
Date: May 7
Location: The Hoxton

No, we’re not telling you to have a big night out. We’re talking about a great Toronto charity called Homes First whose main goal is to provide affordable, stable housing and support to break the cycle of homelessness in our city. Up for auction at Tie One On will be scarves and ties donated from the closets of Charlize Theron, Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon, and many, many more. When’s the last time you got to accessorize and help out our city at the same time?

Lana Del Ray
Date: May 13
Location: Sony Centre for the Performing Arts

Remember back in 2012,when everyone on the planet was forced to have an opinion on Lana Del Rey? Well, it’s two years later and she’s currently scorching her way across North America with her (possibly Dan Auerbach-produced) third full length album, Ultraviolence. So far, LDR is captivating audiences with her trademark hip-hop vocal cadence, breathy innuendo, and lush, orchestral, retro-pop sound. Here’s your chance, Toronto. Because she’s here to change minds.

Raptors
Date: May 2, 4
Location: ACC, Barclay’s Centre

A few weeks ago we had the Raps in this very same column. And we’re happy to say they’ve earned it once again. Heck, we even went to Brooklyn to support them. Whatever the Nets thought they were getting into when they tanked their way down to 6th place so they could play us, they were wrong. Just ask them how it felt when the Raptors won their first road playoff game in 13 years. #WeTheNorth.

CANFAR
Date: May 10
Location: The Burroughes Building

The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research’s 4th annual Paint the Town Red will feature foods from some of the city’s best vendors, a silent art auction of works from up and coming talents, and, of course, a dance floor with live DJ. A raffle with exceptional prizes will also be held, with Porter, Swarovski, and Food Dudes (our favourite dudes) being just a few of the notable contributors. Since 1987, CANFAR has awarded more than $18 million to HIV and AIDS research projects – let’s help keep it up.

QS MBA World Tour
Date: May 4
Location: Intercontinental Toronto Centre

We’re not sure if you know this, but getting an MBA is kind of a big deal. It turns out having a Masters of Business Administration is, well, pretty good for business.
