Notable Now Toronto: June 6, 2014

Father’s Day
Date: June 15th
Location: Wherever dad is.

We thought we’d give you a week’s heads up so you can get your dad’s special day all set up. Whether it’s making him feel like a king with a bbq at Casa Loma, letting him be captain for a day with brunch on the harbour, or just settling into some fine craft beers, you’d better start booking tickets and making reservations now.

World Cup
Date: June 12-July13
Location: Brazil/Bars

There’s going to be honking. Lots of honking. And flags too. Definitely flags. Even if you’re not particularly interested in watching countries vie for the golden trophy, there’s simply no way you won’t be affected by the beautiful game. So we suggest you settle in for a month of celebrating all sorts of drink specials, patio weather, and men in tight shorts.

NXNE
Date: June 13-22
Location: Various

As our monthly music column points out, where CMW scores with history, prestige, and a who’s who gathering of industry influence, NXNE reigns supreme with straight-up star and stage power. And the proof is in the numbers: last year CMW brought 1,200 bands and entertained a total audience of 100,000 attendees; NXNE posted only 1,000 bands, but claimed over 350,000 concertgoers. The people spoke. And we expect them to speak again this year.

Luminato Festival
Date: June 6-15
Location: Various

Nearly a month ago we told you to get tickets to the Luminato Festival, and we hope you listened. ‘Cause if you did, you’ll also be listening to the likes of The Roots, Ziggy Marley, and TV on the Radio this weekend. If you’re kicking yourself after reading that sentence then you should probably head to Notable.ca right now to see if you can win a pair of free tickets.

Scorsese
Date: June 5-July 1
Location: TIFF Bell Lightbox

We don’t think we’re going out on a limb when we say you probably haven’t watched enough Polish cinema in your time. And yet, Poland has one of the richest cinematic histories in the world. So what better introduction could there be than by sitting through a curated selection chosen by none other than Martin Scorsese himself? 21 films in 26 days. This is the crash course you never knew you were looking for.

Taste of Little Italy
Date: June 13-15
Location: College between Bathurst and Shaw

This is exactly what it sounds like. In it’s 16th year, Taste of Little Italy has teamed up with Barilla (Italy’s #1 pasta brand) to make this their best festival yet. Expect all the Italian food you can handle, drinks, DJs, and art. The highlight of the weekend, however, will undoubtedly be the Italy v. England World Cup game playing on a video wall Saturday afternoon. Remember what we said about flags?
