Notable Now Toronto: July 20, 2012

From notable restaurant openings on King West to the Danforth, we've covered the culinary news you need to know to stay on top of Toronto's food scene. We've also thrown in some must-attend events for young professionals in our weekly Notable Now column

Just Opened: The Beer Academy
Six Pints Specialty Beer Co., a division of Molson Coors, opened up The Beer Academy in the old Duggan’s brewery space at 75 Victoria Street. Aside from acting as a small brewery, The Beer Academy offers tastings, samplings, and even classes, educating the masses on the appreciation of beer. (You’ll also be able to pick up some of the company’s brands on-site.)

Just Opened: 417 Restaurant and Lounge
417 Restaurant and Lounge is the latest hotspot to hit the Danforth. Executive Chef Kai Zyganiuk is sending out a Mediterranean/European inspired menu with a focus on using local ingredients. The signature cocktails are made with flare, and 417 features a beer menu replete with Ontario Craft Breweries. Find it, not surprisingly, at 417 Danforth Avenue.

Just Opened: Le Ti Colibri
Nestled in Kensington Market at 291 Augusta Avenue, Le Ti Colibri is bringing a taste of the islands to DT Toronto. Serving up French West Indies cuisine – think a Creole burger or quiche, cassava, and the like – this new spot is the perfect distraction from the hustle and bustle of city streets. Bright, colourful and inviting, the space is upstaged only by the complexities of the dishes at this casual eatery.

Just Opened: Weslodge Saloon
From two Toronto tastemaking heavyweights – Hanif Harji and Charles Khabouth – comes the first of two new spots on ground level at 478 King Street West. The food, expedited by Chef Stuart Cameron, is haute Old West, like the Wagyu Corned Beef, or the Chorizo Scotch Egg. The space is saloon-esque, and the brown liquor cocktails are the perfect Wild West throwback.

Just Opened: Get Well Bar
A new bar on Dundas West is encouraging you to lift your spirits. Get Well Bar opened up just a couple weeks ago, showcasing a rather tight craft beer selection on tap, interesting decor that’s one part trendy, one part off-beat, vintage pinball and gaming machines, and live music. You’ll catch it at 1179 Dundas Street West.

24th Annual Beaches International Jazz Festival
From July 20 through 29, at various spots in the Beaches, the namesake International Jazz Festival is on for its 24th year. Featuring international jazz acts, Latin Square, the Big Band and World Beat Stages, the famed StreetFest, and much more, this fest has become one of the widest spread community events in the city, attracting everyone from East to West to commune and groove out to some slick stylings.
