Notable Now Toronto: January 3, 2014

Resolutions
Date: Jan. 1
Location: Wherever the nearest gym is.

Lose weight, quit smoking, eat healthier, exercise more, be a better parent, child, friend, lover – we’ve heard ‘em all. Every year we all get together for a few days and commit ourselves to being the best possible us’s there are. Sadly, resolutions are often more notable for their failure rather than their success. So here’s to having a plan and making it to week two!

Music
Date: January 7, 8, 9
Location: Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, 145 Queen St. W

The Canadian Opera Company is back from a few weeks of holiday to kick of their winter concert series. Ever wondered if you might actually enjoy live classical music but couldn’t be bothered to rent a tux and find out? Well, luckily these one-hour gems are the perfect price – free. So spend sixty minutes with some timeless classics in 2014, no penguin suit necessary.

Motorcycles
Date: January 3, 4, 5
Location: The Toronto International Centre, 6900 Airport Road

We know it’s winter, but when bikers speak, we listen. And it turns out they’re talking about North America’s largest retail show hitting Toronto this weekend. We’re talkin’ over 500 exhibitors, more than 1,000 bikes, and roughly 50,000 leather-clad spectators. From custom jobs to classic rides, if it’s on two motorized wheels you’ll find it here. Segways not included.

Movies
Date: January 3–12
Location: Bell Lightbox, 350 King St W, Toronto

TIFF kicks off its week-long celebration of Canadian film on Friday, January 3rd with Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival. The festival will include screenings of each selected film, as well as an In Conversation With featuring Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal, attending on behalf of their top-ten film, Enemy. Other films to make the cut include Edward Burtynsky’s Watermark and Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle, Canada’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category.

Surfing
Date: Whenever you get the nerve.
Location: Ashbridges Bay

It used to be that when we talked about surfing we thought of Hawaiian beaches and crystal clear blue water. Well, how about full body wetsuits and snowflakes instead? That’s right, Lake Ontario is fast becoming a legitimate place to catch a wave in the winter (not to mention Hang 10). If you thought warm water surfing was exhilarating, imagine how much the threat of hypothermia ups the excitement. Cowabunga, dude.

Brides
Date: January 3, 4, 5
Location: 136 Winges Road, Main Floor, Unit 10. Woodbridge, ON

Well, potential brides anyway. Canada’s Bridal Show is sweeping into the GTA for the weekend and bringing with it a plethora of all things white and flowery. There’ll be prizes, DJs, diamond rings, and over a 150 different booths telling and selling you everything you need for your big day. So hopefully your man’s smart enough to have already put a ring on it, or you should take him anyway and make him see the light.
