Notable Now Toronto: January 10, 2014

Notable Now this week in Toronto: Drake Night at the ACC (Raptors game), the Toronto International Boat Show, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a hands-on oyster event, Passport for Change and the 19th Annual Niagara Icewine Festival

Drake
Date: Jan. 11
Location: ACC

This Saturday the Raptors will suit up against the Brooklyn Nets in their black alternates. Why, you ask? Cause it’s Drake Night at the ACC. We’re not sure if this means anything more than Drizzy showing up, a Drake Night Edition Tee, and a halftime DJ set by Future The Prince, but the Raps’ newest ambassador can clearly do anything he wants and we want to be there to see it.

Boats
Date: Jan. 10 – 19
Location: Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place: 100 Princes’ Blvd., Toronto

Last weekend it was brides and motorcycles, this weekend it’s boats. The Toronto International Boat Show is coming to town and bringing with it the world’s largest indoor lake – seriously. Not only will you be able to check out all the demos you can handle, but you can actually try out the ones you like on real water! Could be a nice way to distract yourself from the -35 degree weather outside. Oh, and Duma the wakeboarding, boat-driving wonder dog will be there too in case you were worried.

Music
Date: Various
Location: Massey Hall, Roy Thomson Hall

Neil Young and Diana Krall will be at Massey Hall for a benefit concert in support of Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Legal Defense on Sunday night. Though you should probably pray to the Craigslist Gods if you want in. The Pixies will be there next Wednesday the 15th. And apparently when you’re as famous as Mozart people celebrate your birthday even if it’s some strange number like 258. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will be presenting various Mozart works over the next two weeks at Roy Thomson Hall as a nod to the great man.

Oysters
Date: Jan. 12
Location: 633 College St., Toronto

Think you know a good shuck when you see one? Well now there’s a chance to find out for sure. Hogtown Pub and Oysters is putting on a hands-on, three-hour seminar that’ll teach you everything from how to buy, store, cook, dress, and shuck your favourite mollusks. Included in the $95 price tag will be your very own shucker and recipe book.

Change
Date: Jan. 12
Location: Wychwood Barns: 601 Christie St., Toronto

This is the healthiest speed dating we’ve ever heard of. Probably because you’re not trying to hook up for nice night out, but rather a better way to live your life. At Passport for Change you’ll get up to six one-minute “Speed Meetings” with whatever experts you think can best help you reach all your health and fitness goals. There’ll also be several group talks given on a variety of health and wellness issues as well as healthy food and drink options. Did we mention this was healthy?

Wine
Date: Jan. 10 – 26
Location: Niagara, U of T

This weekend, the 19th Annual Niagara Icewine Festival will kick off its two-week celebration of this oh-so-Canadian delicacy. Galas, events, tastings, and wine and cheese seminars should keep you plenty warm through January. If you’re looking to stay a little more local, however, check out the Ontario Wine Society’s 100-Mile Pinot tasting on Monday night. You’ll receive a structured tasting that features award-winning wines from Ontario’s appellations. Bottoms up!
