Notable Now Toronto: August 31, 2012

TIFF 2012
It’s back, and the star power is glitzier than ever. The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off September 6th and runs through the 16th. Mark your calendars, single tickets to shows go on sale September 2nd. Arguably in the top three of the world’s great film fests, this unstoppable force showcases national and international films ranging from indies to blockbusters. And let’s not forget all the parties.

Just Opened: Glory Hole Doughnuts
A favourite amongst foodies, Glory Hole Doughnuts finally has its own permanent shop at 1596 Queen Street West. Calling these doughnuts gourmet would be an understatement. Flavours range from the traditional (think Cinnamon Sugar and Lemon) to the deliciously outlandish (Granola and Yogurt, Pistachio and Chocolate, and Banana Cream Pie.)

Just Opened: Rakia Bar
At 1402 Queen St. East is where you’ll find Rakia Bar, a brand new entry on Toronto’s resto/bar scene. Rakia is a fruit distillate (think a fruit brandy) that’s common in Eastern Europe. So, not surprisingly, you’ll find some amazing different rakias at the bar. To complement the eau-de-vie, you’ll find Eastern European share plates and some mains that have a distinctive French influence.

TIFF Overdrive Launch Party
The Drake Hotel’s going into Overdrive for TIFF 2012. On September 6th, they’re launching this retro-inspired thematic across the hotel with a massive party sponsored by Stella Artois and Sailor Jerry. DJs will take over the Underground while guests sip special actor-inspired cocktails and get tattooed up for free at a mobile tattoo shop. 1150 Queen Street West.

JNF Future Party 2012
On September 12th at The Hoxton (69 Bathurst Street), famed DJ Samantha Ronson will be spinning beats and revving up the scene as revellers gyrate during the 2012 Future Party, hosted by JNF. The proceeds from this year’s massive event will be used to create “security planting” around the Nir Oz Kibbutz, which borders Gaza.

Fashion Cares 25
On September 9th, Fashion Cares 25 will be held at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (1 Front St. E.), and will present a dazzling evening of entertainment, fashion, and philanthropy. The AIDS Committee of Toronto and Elton John AIDS Foundation have partnered to make this, the final Fashion Cares event, the most memorable to date, with a spectacular performance by Elton John and Friends in the wings.
