Notable Now: January 27, 2012

Now Open: CB2
Crate and Barrel’s more modern/urban living line, CB2, finally has a Canadian home right at the southeast corner of Queen and Bathurst. Think of it as the love-child of Crate and Barrel and IKEA, or don’t, it’s your choice. Point is: modern furniture and accessories now abound at 651 Queen Street West.

Now Open: Pachuco
Named after the Mexican sub-culture in the 40s and 50s of “zoot-suit-wearing mobsters,” Pachuco is a new Danforth resto serving up dishes that play the meeting ground between Old Mexico and new world flavours. Psst…They have five types of guacamole and some rather, shall we say, interesting empanadas. Find it at 99 Danforth Avenue.

Screening: The Ponzi Scheme
Renowned Toronto-based filmmaker Billie Mintz’s celebrated documentary about his loss of life savings thanks to a seedy Ponzi Scheme is showing at the underused Projection Booth Theatre (1035 Gerrard Street East) starting on February 3rd. A prolific piece of film that will educate the masses to the inside workings of this defrauding scheme.

Opening Soon: $tock Restaurant
Yes, ladies and gents, the wait is almost over. $tock Restaurant (like the dollar sign?) in the Trump International Hotel and Tower is still on tap to open on the 31st. It’s notable if only for the fact that The Donald is involved, and it’s expected to be the new hotspot for TO’s movers and shakers.

Come Up To My Room
Each year, the Gladstone Hotel opens its suites to artists and designers to outfit the various spaces in intricate and imaginative ways. Pegged as the hotel’s Alternative Design Event, this four-day event (on through the 29th) gives these creative geniuses carte blanche in re-imagining the hotel’s inner rooms. A definite feast for the eyes.
