Notable Now Calgary: May 9, 2014

X-Fest
Tickets are now sale for X-Fest 2014 – one full-on weekend of music. During August 30 and 31, Jack White, The Arctic Monkeys, Foster The People and Cage The Elephant are going to be lighting up Fort Calgary. This is the most impressive line-up that X-Fest has had to date and seems like a pretty cool way to spend your long weekend. To purchase tickets or check out the full line up, click here.

Vine Styles Is Now Open
The newest addition to the Kensington neighbourhood is Vine Styles wine boutique, where the concept is all about selling wine by style instead of region. You’ll love the creative layout of the shop and the handy tasting notes that accompany all the bottles on the shelf. These guys also carry a fun selection of craft beers and spirits if you’re looking to stock the beer fridge or liquor cabinet. There’s always something to sample at the tasting bar, so stop in to say hello and see what’s open.

Thanks, Mom!
Pssst, this is a friendly reminder that May 11rg is Mother’s Day. Don’t be caught empty-handed or unprepared. Moms love nothing more than receiving nice cards, a bouquet of flowers and, of course, brunch. If you’re not much of a cook then you have lots of great restaurants that take reservations. There’s Notable in Montgomery, The Lake House on Lake Bonavista, and River Cafe in Prince’s Island Park. If you cover all these bases there’s a good chance that you’ll be the favourite kid this year.

Is There a G15?
Until May 17 you can catch the super ridiculous theatre production called Bingo Ladies. Just thinking about the oddball people you encounter at some of these halls should be enough to make you want to go. Audiences will have the bizarre privilege of exploring the world of ink dabbers, lucky troll dolls and some pretty crazy superstitions that go hand-in-hand with the strange phenomenon we know as bingo. Show times run every day with the exception of Sunday. 403-265-4292.

Native Tongues Comes To Commonwealth Bar
Holy guacamole. Here’s some exciting news: Native Tongues Taqueria is moving into Commonwealth Bar, and to celebrate there will be a weird and wild grand opening party that involves tacos, hip-hop and live Mexican wrestling. The last luchadore event that was held at the Royal Canadian Legion sold out weeks in advance so don’t wait to buy your tickets. You can find tickets here or at Vine Arts Wine and Spirits. Follow @NativeTongueYYC to get the latest details about this loco event.

Off to the Races
Get ready to be regal this summer with fabulous hats and carefully crafted cocktails at a Kentucky Derby-style event that will bring elegance back to thoroughbred horse racing in Southern Alberta. Already anticipated as a must-attend social event, this will be a fun mix of people who are looking to celebrate Old World leisure with a day at the races. The Packwood Grand will take place at the Millarville Racetrack on July 1st and guests will have the option to be shuttled from downtown. Tickets are $100 and available here.
