Notable Now Calgary: May 30, 2014

The Barber of Cowtown
In a very fun twist, the Cowtown Opera presents the Barber of Seville but in a totally modernized style. From May 30 to June 1 you can catch The Barber of Cowtown, which tells the tale of deception and love – only this story takes palce in the old West. You’ll love this classic opera updated to suit the sensibilities of current Calgary folk. All performances will take place at the Lantern Community Church (1401 10th Avenue SE).

Sake Dinner
Ramen is the thing to eat in Calgary right now, and on June 3rd Goro + Gun is throwing their first big noodle party from 5 to 9 p.m. with Hakkaisan Sake. There will be a colourful five-course meal served while you get to check out a traditional samurai sword display, listen to some Japanese drumming, and witness the cracking of the sake barrel (a Japanese ritual for good luck). This event has everything! To purchase your tickets for the sake dinner, click here. Tickets are $100 and well worth the cost of admission.

When I Grow Up…
On June 4th CBC Radio presents an open-mic night at Broken City that will showcase a group of adults sharing excerpts from their childhood book reports, diaries, letters and poetry. Similar to the concept of Mortified Nation, you’ll be doubled over in laughter as grown people share some absolutely hilarious anecdotes from the perspective of their childhood selves. Even better, CBC will be recording the whole show. Tickets can be purchased on Brown Paper Tickets. Show is at 8 p.m. and tickets are $10.

Princess Bride
On June 6th you get to revisit a classic story when The Fifth Reel presents a special screening of The Princess Bride at the Plaza Theatre. Starring Cary Elwes and Robyn Wright, this classic fairy tale of love, giants and villains has a little something for everyone to enjoy and since the film doesn’t’ start until 10 pm you’ll have time to grab dinner or a drink at one of the many fabulous spots in Kensington. #Humperdinck. Get your tickets in advance here.

Make time for TED
The 5th Annual TEDxYYC is taking place on June 13th at the Jubilee Auditorium and you’re invited! TED events are all about ideas worth spreading and TEDxYYC’s theme this year is ‘contagious inspiration’. In recent years TEDxYYC has featured diverse speakers including the CEO of the Barbican Arts Centre in the UK, Sir Nicholas Kenyon, Paralympic medalist and sit-skiier Josh Dueck, and children’s folk singer and Canadian icon Raffi. The topics for 2014 will include sustainability, education, technology, arts and culture to promote conversation, action and cooperation in our community. Visit www.tedxyyc.com for the list of confirmed speakers and stay tuned for the full roster, which will be announced shortly.

Tea Party at The Palliser
This is something to keep on your radar: on June 15th the Fairmont Palliser Hotel celebrates its centennial with a grand afternoon celebration on 9th Avenue SW. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. The soiree begins at 2 p.m. and you’ll be able to enjoy the ribbon cutting ceremony to the main entrance followed by a birthday cake and tea service. There will also be music from the Summit Big Band. The Fairmont is one of the oldest and most exquisite buildings in our downtown, so make sure you’re there to help celebrate a piece of Calgary heritage. www.fairmont.com/palliser
