Alberta Theatre Projects’ Spring Show: Red
John Logan’s drama about a young artist hired to assist the world famous painter Mark Rothko is on at the Epcor Centre’s Martha Cohen Theatre through May 18. Having won a Tony Award in 2010, the two-character play focuses on the mentor/student relationship, which has been said to have been fierce, funny and life-changing. Amaluna
The Big Top is set up at the Stampede Grounds, and the circus costumes are finished. The Cirque du Soleil’s latest tour through Calgary is on now and brings a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. A love story weaves the tale with trust, faith and harmony as key themes. Dress in your best circus chic, and wonder at the human feats possible from the Icarian Games to the Teeterboard. We may not all be able to master the Chinese Pole, but we can all wonder at the imagination of Guy Laliberté.

International Beer Festival
At the BMO Centre (Halls D&E) May 3 and 4, fun filled days of increasing your beer knowledge, sampling some of the more than 200 beers on site and voting for the People’s Choice awards awaits. Check out the beer seminars and find a new favourite brew. There will be yummy food and you get a keepsake sample mug to use during the Festival and take home when you’re done. The Fest is open to the public from 4pm to 10pm on Friday and 2pm to 9pm on Saturday. Tickets are available online at albertabeerfestivals.com 

Sled Island Rock Fundraiser Lottery
Five new bands will be created to perform material less than 12 hours old. 25 musicians from The Dudes, Stalwart Sons, The Gooeys, Lab Coast, Faux Fur and more are participating. Funds raised go towards supporting the independent Sled Island music festival happening June 19 to 23. You never know what you’ll get when names are drawn from a hat and entirely new groups are formed. The show starts at 9pm and is $10 at the door. The Palomino, 109 7th Avenue SW.

TELUS Spark’s Adult Only Night
May 9 brings the Science Centre’s monthly childless night. Open late, with live music and adult beverages to be had, check out this month’s feature exhibit, The Amazing Human Body. Take a date or organize a group of friends and wander through the exhibits and participate in the hands-on features without fear of budging in front of a kid, but with full certainty you’ll feel like a kid. Cinco de Mayo
One day early, on May 4, the Museum of Contemporary of Calgary (MOCA) is having their 2nd Annual Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser. Tickets are $75 for the under 30 crowd, or $100 regularly. The Fundraiser starts at 7pm at the new Vagabond Beer Works Brew Pub. Fun, food, drinks and dancing with live music by Los Majes and DJ Mikey DaRoza.
