Notable Now Calgary: June 20, 2014

The Hippest Outdoor Concert
Olympic Plaza is the place to be this Friday June, 20th. Sled Island is in full swing and from 8pm onwards you’ll be able to catch live performances by Portland’s alt-folk funk band Blitzen Trapper followed by the very talented songstress Neko Case. There will be no shortage of great bands playing this weekend, but it would be a shame to miss these two epic shows. You can find the full line-up of screenings, concerts, art displays and comedy acts on the Sled Island website.

Prepare To Be Seduced
Hold onto your hats, ladies, that dreamy French-Canadian singer we call Michael Buble is scheduled to appear at the Calgary Saddledome on June 23rd as part of his To Be Loved tour. Actually, he’s so gosh darn popular here they’ve added a second show, so you can also catch him on June 24th. Tickets are still available on Ticketmaster so prepare to be seduced by one of the most suave and romantic Canadians that we know.

Cher
The music doesn’t stop this month. Cher is here on June 25th, so if you aren’t into indie music and don’t care much for the crooning of Mr. Buble, this is for you. Known as the goddess of pop, Cher has been making waves in the music business with show-stopping performances and questionable outfits way before Gaga was born. Cher’s concert are sure to have all the glitz and glamour of something you’d see on Broadway. If you’re having a hard time figuring out what to wear, don’t rule out feathers or headdresses. This performance will be held at the Calgary Saddledome.

Shakespeare Is Back
The third season of Shakespeare By The Bow begins on June 25th and this year the troupe will be presenting a modern and amusing version of The Comedy Of Errors. The story follows the outcome of twins being separated at birth only to wind up living in the same city. The audience will love the chaos and confusion that follows as people mistake each of their identities. All the theatrical fun will take place in Prince’s Island Park.

Pulp Fiction
The Fifth Reel is celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of the slickest movies ever made. Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction is a cult classic with an unreal cast. It features a slimmer and saner version of John Travolta, Uma Thurman as a stunning femme fatale, and of course the omnipresent Samuel L Jackson as the jive-talking henchmen that finds god. If you feel like catching Pulp Fiction on the big screen, make sure to be at the Plaza Theatre at 10pm on June 28th. This will sell out, so buy tickets in advance.

Off To The Races
If you’re not camping on July 1, you need to be at the Packwood Grand. After all, this Kentucky Derby-inspired affair is going to be the talk of the town, and who doesn’t want to spend a regal day with fabulous hats and carefully-crafted cocktails? Guests will have the option to be shuttled from downtown Calgary, which is highly recommend. Beyond the six thrilling horse races, there will be a cigar lounge and a chance to be named ‘best dressed’. Don’t miss out.
