Notable Now Calgary: June 15, 2012

Suncor Energy Stage One Festival of New Work – June 4-23
A range of developing one-act plays by emerging and established playwrights are being developed with professional directors, actors and dramaturges. These workshops will culminate in a public reading at Lunchbox Theatre (160 – 115 9 Ave SE), where you can give feedback as audience members. Not only is this a sneak peek into future productions, it also gives you the opportunity to play a part in the development of new Canadian plays.

Beef the Festival – June 15 & 16
As Albertans, we love our beef, and it’s time to celebrate our adoration at Beef the Festival, happening at Heritage Park Historical Village
(1900 Heritage Dr. SW). Enjoy culinary delights presented by a variety of local restaurant cantinas or attend the various educational yet fun sessions, amongst celebrity chef Mark McEwan and local culinary experts as they teach you everything you need to know in order to perfectly prepare your cut of beef. If this has your mouth watering, we suggest attending the gala featuring a five-course dinner experience created by Chef McEwan.

PARK Designer Sample Sale – June 16
Fashionistas will be excited to hear that PARK is hosting their second annual Designer Sample Sale at the Gerry Thomas Gallery (602 11 Ave SW). Check out the latest pieces and lines by an array of designers, including Paul Hardy, Caitlin Power, Lara Presber, and Anne B Accessories. There will ample wine and refreshments to keep you going (and smiling) as you shop.

MEC Bikefest – June 16
Calgary cyclists and cycling enthusiasts unite for MEC Bikefest, a day-long community celebration of all things bicycle related. Head down to Eau Claire Festival Plaza (200 Barclay Parade SW), from 10am to 4pm and check out a variety of workshops and clinics to learn everything from how to change a tire to how to cycle safely in traffic, or browse and buy from local bike vendors in the Bikefest Marketplace. Some of the city’s favourite food trucks will also be on site to keep fans and riders hunger-free from all the cheering and riding going down at the best bicycle bash in Calgary.

Motorcycle Ride for Dad – June 16
“I ride for Dad.” This single sentence is the inspiration behind this national event. For several hours on Saturday afternoon, a parade of motorcycles will be riding through Calgary to raise money and spread the word about prostate cancer. If you are interested in participating, pre-registration is June 15 at the Max Bell Theatre from 5-8pm. Whether you plan to ride or simply cheer everybody on, this is a great way to join in the fight against prostate cancer.

NOW OPEN: National Beer Hall
This contemporary North American beer hall recently opened its doors on 17 Avenue (550 17 Ave SW). Focused on craft beers, micro-brews, small-batch brewing and high-quality brewing, they have 72 beers on tap, including Village Brewery (Calgary’s newest brewery) Blonde and Blacksmith. The room is bright, open and, in typical beer hall fashion, has long communal tables where you can sit and make friends with your neighbours as you sip your pint. They also feature a great outdoor patio that is bound to be jammed with YPs throughout the summer months. Open seven days a week from 11am to close, National is ideal for lunch, after work drinks or a full evening of fun.
