Notable Now Calgary: June 14, 2013

Green Island Bike Scavenger Hunt
June is bike month in Calgary, and to get people excited about the Sled Island Music and Art Festival, the first annual Green Island Scavenger Hunt will be held on June 16th to raise awareness about green projects and initiatives in Calgary. All you need is a team of four and a sense of adventure. All participants are welcomed to meet at Local 510 after the hunt for some drinks, eats and great prizes, including tickets to Olympic Plaza events. The event will be happening rain or shine and begins at 2pm. Check out sledisland.com for details and tickets.

Inglewood Night Market
Pop-Ups in Inglewood & Ramsay, the crew who brought us Pop-Ups in Inglewood and Ramsay last summer from opera on Scotsman’s Hill during Stampede to Food in Shorts, presents the first Inglewood Night Market as part of their second Season. The first market will be on June 14 from 6pm-midnight with future night market dates of July 12, August 9 and September 13. The market is set to feature artisans, puppetry, street food, entertainment and some of Inglewood’s merchants. 10th Street SE, in front of Gravity and Bite.

Millarville Farmers’ Market
Do you know your farmer, baker or candlestick maker? The market opens this Saturday and runs each Saturday through October 12, and the growers, makers and artists would love to tell you about their products and what they do. New this year, the market hours are longer, from 9am to 2pm, and there are a variety of new items on the tables from Saskatoons; chicken sausage, cheese making kits, Middle Eastern baking and Indonesian food. Check out millarvilleracetrack.com for directions.

Esker Foundation Summer Exhibition
Esker’s summer exhibition opens this Friday (June 15) and includes a curious collection of paintings by Janet Werner and Dagmara Genda. Werner will be showing over 35 portraits that she has painted over the past 10 years. Werner’s portraits rely on found images and she plays with the idea of unconventional beauty, sometimes using atypical palettes and subjects. Genda’s paintings present a totally fresh perspective on Canadian landscape by melting together images that are iconic to Canadian postcards and re-imagining them in an explosion of colour and shapes. Her work has been compared to jigsaw puzzles. For more information on the exhibition or gallery hours, click here; 4th floor, 1011 – 9th Avenue S.E

Banff Bike Fest
Head out to Banff National Park to cheer on cyclists from all over North America as they participate in Banff Bike Fest, which runs from June 13 to 16. There are five high-calibre bike races scheduled over the weekend and over $20,000 in prize money. Events will include the Criterium, an intense 1 km lap around Banff Avenue and the Lake Louise Road Race, a demanding but picturesque 81-km race along the Bow Valley Parkway. On Saturday there will be two non-competitive bike rides that are kid and costume friendly (Cruise for a Cause and Balkan Restaurant Little Crits). For information on the race schedule, click here.
