Notable Now Calgary: June 13, 2014

The Continental
Get ready for a grand weekend of equestrian-style fun. From June 12-15, Spruce Meadows is hosting the FEI CSIO 5-star Tournament that will be a great chance to watch some world-class show jumping, with the winner going on to compete in the finals in Barcelona. Guests will love the beautiful scenery that’s just a 20-minute drive from Calgary. This will be the only horse event like this happening in Canada this summer.

Ideas Worth Spreading
If you’re not going to make it to the TEDxYYC event at the Jubilee on Friday, then you can still check out the workshop happening with BDC on Saturday, June 14th. TED guest speaker Bart Houlahan is going to be at Hotel Arts at 9am to speak about the future of capitalism and his project known as B Corps, which focuses on bringing a higher level of social and environmental standards to business. Craig Ryan, BDC’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, will also be sharing how BDC became the first B Corp-certified financial institution. Tickets for the TEDxYYC/BDC Workshop with BCorp can be found here.

Big Rock Eddies
Described as an evening of creativity, entertainment and charity, Monday, June 16th is the annual Big Rock Eddies, a hilarious event that celebrates the ingenious people out there who love beer and art and have managed to merge their passions into filmmaking. Simply put, these are beer commercials that will make you howl. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll probably want a cold one. Doors are at 6pm and show begins at 8pm at the EPCOR Centre.

Best Summer Festival
Tell your boss that you have to clear your calendar from June 18th to 22nd because Sled Island is happening and you won’t want to miss one single moment. For those of you who think Stampede is kind of a drag, this will be a breath of fresh air. Get ready for a week full of music, film, comedy and art. The city will be full of bikes, bands and brilliant parties. Get your tickets now. For the full line up, click here.

PARK in the Park
In partnership with Victoria Park BRZ, PARK, as in Promoting Artists and Redefining Kulture, is having a sale on June 21st and 22nd. This will be the third year running and anyone who wants to do a little shopping can stop by Haultain Park (225 13 Avenue SE) on Saturday and Sunday to browse the racks for funky local fashion. Admission is free and there will be over 75 vendors, live music and food trucks on site.

Said The Whale
After enjoying a bit of a break in their hometown of Vancouver, Said The Whale is back on tour with Tokyo Police Club and they’ll be stopping through town on July 3rd – just in time for the start of Stampede. You can catch this indie rock act at the Coca Cola main stage at 9pm that evening. This will be an all-ages show and the show is covered with admission to the grounds. If you forgot your cowboy boots or just can’t handle anymore stomach-dropping rides, this is going to be the spot for you.
