Notable Now Calgary: July 25, 2014

Shakespeare in the Park
The third season of Shakespeare By The Bow begins on June 25th and this year the troupe will be presenting a modern and amusing version of The Comedy Of Errors. The story follows the outcome of twins separated at birth only to wind up living in the same city. The audience will love the chaos and confusion that follows as people mistake their identities. All the theatrical fun will take place in Prince’s Island Park. You can check the Theatre Calgary site for show times.

Banff Arts Festival
The Banff Arts Festival is now underway with fun film screenings, readings and exhibitions to check out all summer. On Saturday, July 26th, Coeur de Pirate will be playing at the Shaw Amphitheatre; if you buy one ticket you receive the second one for free. Coeur de Pirate is the award-winning solo act featuring French-Canadian pop darling Beatrice Martin. She’s got it all: the voice, the talent and over 25 million views on YouTube. She’ll be playing some of her newest tracks off her latest album Trauma, which includes covers by the likes of Amy Winehouse and The Rolling Stones. Show begins at 6:30 pm.

Block Kitchen
If you’re going to be in Banff for the Arts Festival, then you might want to put Block Kitchen and Bar on your radar. Located on the main drag of Banff Avenue, Block has just opened up and offers a great selection of cold beverage and some tasty tapas. If you’re making a night of it, this hot spot is conveniently close to all the other great venues in town and they serve food until 1am. The Diablo sausages are worth ordering. Yum!

Punk Rock Bingo
Hurray for summertime and being able to spend a bit of quality indulgence outside for a change. Enjoying a few drinks and snacks on the sunny south-facing Ship and Anchor patio followed by a game of Punk Rock Bingo on Tuesday night is probably one of the best ways to celebrate this time of year. Grab some buddies, order a round and try your luck with a bingo dabber at everyone’s favourite watering hole on 17th Avenue. You’ll thank yourself on Wednesday.

X-Fest is Coming!
This is your heads up to buy tickets to this year’s X-Fest, which might arguably have the best line up yet. Taking place in Calgary over the August long weekend (August 30th and 31st), the 2014 line-up has some pretty big acts like Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Foster The People, The Smalls and Death Cab For Cutie. If you’re looking for a new act to see, then we highly recommend July Talk. This is an all ages event at Fort Calgary but there will be a beer garden on premise. Tickets can be purchased here.

Avenue Q
You have to love a theatre production that is rated R and includes puppets. This month, Stage West is showcasing a play that is best described as sex, drugs and muppets for your viewing pleasure. Avenue Q takes place on a rundown street in New York and focuses around the characters that live on the block. This is a mix of both puppets and real humans and the subject matter is definitely directed at an adult audience. You have until August 31st to catch one of the most talked about productions in town. Tickets are available on the website.
