Notable Now Calgary: August 22, 2014

Unicorns and Dictators
The Esker Foundation is currently featuring the colourful work of Cynthia Girard. At first glance, people are attracted to her work for its playful subject matter painted in a pastel palette, but upon closer inspection her work often references social themes with a deeper message. Walking through her exhibition is like looking at Narnia from the eyes of a Poli-Sci major; not your average gallery tour. If you haven’t yet visited the gallery to see her work, you only have until September 7th so don’t procrastinate. Esker is located at 444, 1011 9th Avenue SE.

Expo Latino
From August 22-24, Prince’s Island Park is going to get a little spicy. Expo Latino is back for another year, where you’ll get the chance to take in a little Latin culture in the form of salsa, zumba, flamenco and tango performances. If you feel like learning a little bit more about the forbidden dance or just having your own dance party, then you’ll want to buy tickets. The Samba Heritage Dance Group that performs on Sunday night will definitely be worth seeing. For tickets and full program information go here

Alley Party
The back alley behind The Grand Theatre is going to become the best party in the entire city on August 30th. The 4th annual Alley Party is a collaboration between the HIFI Club and Theatre Junction Grand, promising both local and international DJ talent, along with drinks being served from the theatre and catering compliments of UBU. People who decided to fly out of the city or spend the weekend camping are seriously missing out. For a full line-up of DJs and set times you can check out their site

Pride Calgary
Sticking around for the long weekend? Why not jazz up your days off with all the colours of the rainbow? The annual Calgary Pride Parade is taking place on August 31st starting at noon on Stephen Avenue and will be more entertaining than your usual procession. Following the fabulous street festivities, head to Shaw Millennium Park if you’re keen to continue celebrating Pride. Don’t forget to grab your complimentary Pride flag from the Winners on 8th Avenue from August 22nd onwards.

Scavenger Hunt
As if Market Collective isn’t cool enough, they also have a bike scavenger hunt taking place on September 6th. At noon you and your bike posse meet at the East Village Riverwalk to get the details and away you go on an incredible urban adventure. Each team can consist of a minimum of two people and a maximum of four people. You’ll also be required to bring a digital camera or phone with a camera to snap images of everything on the list. To learn more about this great event or to sign up, you can visit their website.

Shaken, Not Stirred
For those of you who are already booking into September, you’ll want to put this one in your calendar: On September 19th The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is putting on a performance inspired by the music of 007. Sit back and take in recognizable songs from films like Dr. No, Live and Let Die and Adele’s stunning rendition of Skyfall from one of the more recent films. This will no doubt be an evening of intrigue, espionage and stiff cocktails. Tickets will sell out quickly.
