Belgian Brewmaster’s Dinner at Craft
Head on down to CRAFT Beer Market (345 10 Ave SW) on Tuesday, August 20, for this month’s Brewmaster’s Dinner. This installment has a Belgium flare and includes a chance to win a trip for two to Belgium (you have to be there to win!) Executive Chef Paul McGreevy is creating a four-course menu to pair with a selection of Belgian beers. Each course is set to bring out the flavours of both food and brew. Parksale
After being cancelled in June due to the flood, Calgary’s annual outdoor market is on again on Saturday, August 17, at Haultain Park (225 13th Ave SWI. PARK stands for “Promoting Artists, Redefining Kulture” and they are a network organized by a group of young Calgarian artists to promote and support emerging artists and fashion designers in the community. The sale features local and independent artists and fashion designers. Admission is free to the event, which runs from 10am to 5pm. Kayben Farms Family Brunch
Join Top Chef Canada’s contender Nicole Gomes of Nicole Gourmet Catering out in Okotoks in celebrating City Palate Magazine’s 20th anniversary on August 17 from 11am until 2pm. Tickets include a multi-course brunch. While you’re there, harvest some fresh Kayben black currants. Tickets are $65 for adults and $15 for kids. Proceeds go to Made by Momma, who provide wholesome nourishment and nurturing care to mothers and young children facing situations of adversity and crisis. Opera in the Village
Starting August 22nd, the East Village will be transformed into festival stages for the Opera in the Village festival. You can enjoy a picnic in the park, Pirates of Penzance, or the event ‘So you think you can sing opera?’, which will be held at the side stage festival tent. Enjoy a beverage at the Pirates Cove before each performance and stop by the Simmons building for Pirate movie nights on the 23rd and 24th, which will include a screening of the much-loved Princess Bride. Russell Brand
This infamous man of standup comedy and Katy Perry’s ex-husband will be in Calgary on August 23rd. You can look forward to be entertained by his bawdy and sometimes outrageous sense of humour. Brand made his breakthrough in the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall as the drug-addled Aldous Snow. Since then, he’s starred in multiple movies including Get him to the Greek, Rock of Ages and Despicable Me. For ticket information, click here ($55.50 and $65.50). Get Literary Calgary
The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association is all about supporting the people of Alberta to contribute to local magazines like Avenue, Impact and Oil World. This Sunday the AMPA will be hosting a free event that runs from 1 to 2.30pm in Olympic Plaza. There will be poetry readings by the Calgary Port Laureate and other local writers like Kathleen Brown and Stuart Ian McKay. Event details can be found here.
