Notable Now Calgary: April 25, 2014

Cavalia Odysseo
Starting April 23rd, you are invited to enjoy a fantastic show under the big top situated on the Canada Olympic Park grounds. Cavalia Odysseo is one part Cirque de Soleil and one part Stampede with dancers, acrobats, musicians and 70 horses performing amazing feats that defy gravity and all expectations. The structure is the biggest of its kind right now in the world and the costumes, moving stages and spectacle will be like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Due to popular demand, shows will be running until June 1st and you can purchase tickets to both matinee and evening performances.

The Summit
Come and see the latest works of Sarah Burwash, which are now on display at the Untitled Contemporary Art Main Space (343 11th Avenue SW). The Summit is a colourful compilation of water colour drawings and installations that touch on historical themes reinterpreted by the artist. The opening reception is Friday evening from 8 to 11pm and admission is free. You can learn more about Burwash’s art at www.sarahburwash.com. For details on gallery hours, click here.

The Heart Truth
During the evening of April 26th you can attend a fashion show with a lot of heart! In an effort to raise awareness about women’s health, The Heart Truth Fashion Show will feature an exciting group of designers who will be dressing local personalities and VIPs in signature red dresses for a one-of-a-kind event. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is a great cause to support and the VIP tickets include a reserved seat for the runway show, a champagne reception and a goody bag to take home. Pop Up Art
On April 28th you can check out a pop-up art gallery happening at the Keynote building (1st Street and 12th Avenue SE). Artists Roger Arndt, Doug Levitt and Murray Phillips will have an interesting collection of their signature Western art up for art fans and residents of the neighbourhood to see. All three artists will be at the show to answer questions about their work and, better yet, if you see something you like you can purchase it at the pop-up. The gallery will run from 8am to 6pm.

UN International Jazz Day
Wednesday, April 30th is UN International Jazz Day and Calgary is invited to come out and enjoy a day of music at no charge. Throughout the day you can catch live jazz and interviews at CJSW, the Johnny Summers Trio will be playing at Southcentre Mall, Gary Martin and the Funk Brothers will be entertaining jazz fans over lunchtime at the EPCOR Centre, and there will be free swing dance lessons at the Mount Pleasant Community Hall. You can also catch a jazz party at Lolita’s later on in the evening and there will be lots of other great events geared towards all ages. Sled Island Rock Lottery
Next Saturday, May 3rd, you’re invited out to the Sled lsland Rock Lottery. Never been? This is how it works: 25 super stellar musicians from Calgary will be entered in a draw and as names are randomly pulled, new bands will be formed for a special one night performance the following night. Once the lottery is complete, each new band will have 12 hours to come up with songs and you just never know what to expect up on stage. All the spontaneous fun goes down at the Palomino at 8pm.
