Notable Neighbourhoods: The Danforth

The Danforth is synonymous with Greektown and Mediterranean cuisine in Toronto, but there's also a host of diverse culinary treasures in this East End neighbourhood. Here are the most notable spots

This week’s Notable Neighbourhood is the Danforth, aka Greektown, aka The Danny. Though most of our top picks aren’t Greek at all, the Danforth is traditionally known as the spot for Mediterranean fare. Our favourites are little more, shall we say, global…

The Combine Eatery
This Southwestern style restaurant helped bring about the gourmet taco craze the city’s currently trending. It’s a mix of down-home and rustic chic, and boasts some delicious comfort fare. The pulled chicken quesadillas are rich, the fried fish tacos perfection thanks to unbelievably tender basa, and the cocktails are, well, go and test them for yourself. Plans are underway for the launch of Combine Eatery’s back patio, as well as a weekend brunch.

Pachuco
When Pachuco opened but a couple months ago, word got round fast that they’ve some of the city’s best guacamole. We tried it…the claims are oh-so-true. The space is small, seating maybe 30, and the service is excellent. Try the margaritas, of which they have about 15 varieties. And the duck confit taquitos are a smash hit.

Allen’s
This steakhouse is a city staple. Rosedalers flock here for some prime cuts of beef, and foodies rejoice in the simplicity of the old school style. (It’s so old school that the swoosh under the logo still says ‘Air Conditioning’, like it’s new or something.) The patio is magnificent, known as one of Toronto’s best ‘backyard’ settings, and you’re guaranteed amazing service that makes most anyone feel like a VIP. The sister restaurant next door, Dora Keogh, is pretty tight too.

Messini
Known for having some of the best gyros on The Danny, Messini is one of our favourite cheap bill/great grub spots. We’ve often had to wait for a table here, and it’s no wonder. The Greek flavours are robust, the portions huge for what you’re paying, and their roasted potatoes are perfection. If you’ve never checked this spot, you must head over and see why the locals love it.

Lolita’s Lust
Kind of sexy, kind of swanky, but wholly comfortable, Lolita’s Lust is another Danforth gem. The food is pretty fantastic – we’ve had some killer foie gras here – and eclectic, a mix of continental and Mediterranean that is utterly satisfying. LL is even known by celebs, and is frequented by many an A-lister come TIFF time. How’s that for Notable?
