Notable Life’s Holiday Traditions and Resolutions

The holidays are personal.

It seems each family has their own routines and traditions that they look forward to each year. Here at Notable Life, we have varying nationalities and religious beliefs. What we all share in common is our love for our families and friends. Some of us have decided to share our favourite holiday traditions, as well as our resolutions for heading into 2018. Happy Holidays Notable readers!

We tried to start a new tradition this year with the Elf on the Shelf. First of all, those things are priced really reasonably at like, $60, and on top of that you have to create these mini-scenarios that require hours of creative conceptualizing and prop making. I would say it takes about an hour to setup EVERY DAY. Like, my husband and I had a creative planning meeting when we first brought it out. Needless to say, we were committed. However, after doing our first ‘bit of mischief’ with the Elf, it turns out that it completley freaked out our son, who was up all night thinking he heard the Elf escape from the box. So basically, we now have a $60 Elf sitting in a box covered in duct tape. Hit me up if you or anyone you know is looking for an Elf with a variety of elf-sized props.

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
Elf. “You sit on the throne of lies”. Best ever.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
Not to spend money on impulse buys. See #1.

LATKES! Recipe: Grate russet potatoes and onion, then squeeze all the liquid out as much as possible. Egg, S&P and some flour and matzo meal. Fry in grapeseed oil. Serve with applesauce and sour cream.

Are Jewish holiday movies even a thing?

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
New Years Resolution: Eat more latkes!

PAM SILVERSTEIN
What is your favourite Holiday tradition?
Go to the movies and then order Chinese food. But if there is a MTV Real World Marathon – I’m not going anywhere!

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
Home For the Holidays (technically it’s a Thanksgiving movie, but serves it’s purpose), The Holiday (Kate Winslet’s storyline) and Four Christmases.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
Ugh.

JOSHUA SEATON
What is your favourite Holiday tradition?
My Dad LOVES making bacon & egg’s for my entire family on Christmas morning, seeing his joy from having all of us around the table while he’s cooking up this classic brings a crazy amount of joy to my heart!

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
A Christmas Story – hands down best holiday movie! “You’ll shoot your eye out” – best line.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
Have more time disconnected up North from the INTERWEBS and get back to shreddin’ on a snowboard on our enormous “mountains” (hills) in Ontario.

What is your favourite Holiday tradition?
Christmas morning. When my sister and I were little, our mum would make us sit and wait at the top of the stairs in our new matching pajamas (gifted on Christmas eve) while she and my dad made Pillsbury cinnamon rolls and coffee.

As adults we now nurse hangovers in front of the fire and exchange gifts as a family. It is beautiful.

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
White Christmas. Danny Kaye’s goofy charm and Vera-Ellen’s impossibly long legs tapping away make me so happy.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
I would like to work to be more mindful of my actions toward others and to complete the projects that I have started. And, I want to be able to do butterfly pull ups.

CHELSEA BRODERICK
What is your favourite Holiday tradition?
Christmas Eve was always my favourite. My mom always throws an open house with friends and neighbours. Now that I have 5 nieces and nephews Christmas morning is also hilarious, seeing them go bananas when they see what Santa left them brings a whole new level excitement to the holiday.

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
Just Friends and Love Actually.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
I want to say less screen time, but considering social is part of job that might not be in the cards.

MIKEY
What is your favourite Holiday tradition?
1. My favourite tradition is when my family blasts the Charlie Brown Christmas Album as we decorate the house. That, and Michael Bublé of course.

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
2. Elf. Will Ferrell. Pure Magic.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
3. I’d say my New Years Resolution is to develop a stronger work ethic, but eh, I’ll do that later.

LAUREN
What is your favourite Holiday tradition?
Every year, my girlfriends and I from high school get together for what we call a “Blackout” Christmas party. Essentially we just all show up with an obnoxious amount of wine and food in hand and spend a night playing games and catching up. Given how long we have all known each other and the different places we are at in our individual lives, this is sometimes the one time of year we have nearly everyone in the same room, which is pretty special (and always results in a wicked hangover).

What is your favourite Holiday movie?
Aside from Elf (since I’m sure that’s nearly everyone’s answer) I would have to say Just Friends and Office Christmas Party.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?
Honestly? To stop hitting snooze on my alarm (ever) because it makes my 5/6 AM wake-ups so much worse, and to actually stick to my plan of dedicating 15-20 minutes per day to mindful meditation or reading in the morning. I should also probably start purchasing some jeans instead of adding to my obnoxious collection of lulu lemon leggings, occasionally.
