Notable After Work Patios in Vancouver: Part 1

When it’s bright and sunny in Van City you can bet patios will be packed after the five o’clock bell tolls. There are undoubtedly plenty of well-known (and well-worn) watering holes close to the CBD, so we opted to do some liquid ‘research’ and dug up a few après-work alternatives. The best part? These beer-drinker paradises won’t break the bank, so you can enjoy more than a couple day-caps…

Mahony & Sons
This family-run tap house opened the doors not too long ago to its downtown location at Burrard Landing, in the new Vancouver Convention Centre. An easy amble from surrounding office towers, this is a great spot to get to know. With more than 20 beers and ciders on tap and by the bottle, plus an inspired West Coast pub-style menu and spacious wraparound Oceanside patio, it’d be easy to unwind until last call at this popular spot. 1055 Canada Place, Unit #36 Vancouver, 604-647-7513.

The Mill Marine Bistro
Come rain or shine, this waterfront European-style pub is a must. In the warmer months it more than doubles its size – offering patio seating for 230 and an enviable selection of different foods, brews, and drink options (including at least six different ways to have your Caeser!) 1199 W.Cordova St, Vancouver, 604-687-6455.

Cardero’s Restaurant
Always packed and popular among the working set, this Coal Harbour spot is a definite stop. A large patio offers the perfect perch for people-watching and is a great place to escape to post strategy meetings at the office. Take in the North Shore scenery, marina and seawall activity while sipping their decidedly delicious (and addictive) sangria. 1583 Coal Harbour Quay, Vancouver, 604-669-7666.

The Boat House Restaurant
Whether you live and work downtown or across the Burrard Bridge in Kits, these restaurants house great, laidback patios with amazing West Coast views. Hello Happy Hour! Each day they offer food and drink specials from 3 to 6pm, perfectly suited to the young professional’s post-work social budget. West End/English Bay Location: 1795 Beach Avenue, Vancouver, 604-669-2225; Kitsilano Beach Location: 1305 Arbutus Street, Vancouver, 504-738-5487

Local Public Eatery
Definitely on the list for our Notable readers, this is a quintessential Kits-style hot spot. Frequented by the UBC crowd, beach-going hipsters, and business moguls alike, don’t be surprised to see a familiar face – perhaps featured in the day’s business section – hanging out at the next table. Great food and an extensive beer and bevy selection help make this a welcome post-work stop. 2210 Cornwall Avenue, Vancouver, 604-734-3589.
