NFLD Woman Posts Tim Hortons Win on Facebook, ‘Friend’ Steals It

Have you ever stopped to think if you can actually trust all of your Facebook friends?

Chances are you probably feel (way too) comfortable sharing all kinds of information with them. And that’s how you get burned worse than from a bad double-double spill.

Margaret Coward of Conception Bay South, Newfoundland was extremely excited after finding out that she had won a $100 gift card to Tim Hortons and shared her winning Roll-Up-the-Rim cup on Facebook.

But when she went to redeem her prize a half an hour later, she was shocked to learn that someone had already claimed her prize.

That someone ended up being one of her 900 Facebook friends that she thought she could trust.

“They went online and entered in my PIN code and attached it to their email and claimed my $100 Tim card,” Coward told the St. John’s Telegram.

A company official later told Coward the email address of the person who claimed the prize couldn’t be revealed for privacy reasons.

After learning the bad news, Coward warned others on Facebook to not make the same mistake.

“Goes to show you that you always need to be careful of what you’re posting and taking pictures of,” Corward wrote. “Something I so excitedly and innocently posted… always a lesson to learn, even at my age.”

Aside from feeling embarrassed about sharing the photo, Coward says she had no idea that prizes can be redeemed online and she wants others to be made aware of the rules.

The change in rules comes as Tim Hortons recently introduced the PIN feature to allow winners to collect their $100 Tim Card prize online, rather than mailing in the winning tab.
