My Notable Toronto: Happy 180th Birthday

You might not know this, but it’s Toronto’s birthday today. Don’t worry, we’re not here to guilt you into buying flowers (when you make it to a 180, flowers just don’t cut it anymore), we’re here to celebrate this world-class city by sharing our favourite memories. Whether it’s a particular spot, a certain day, or a spectacular event, we’ve all had those moments when everything comes together and this city becomes as perfect as we could ever hope for. So here are a few of our favourite memories that we hope will inspire your own. So go ahead and tell us all about #MyNotableToronto.

Spending the day at Trinity Bellwoods Park last Summer. Taking my dog to the pit to play with all of the other pups, watching the live music and impromptu performances in the park and grabbing a coffee across the street at the White Squirrel. Best of all was running into countless friends in the tight-knit community of West Queen West. I finished off the day by heading to OVO Fest. This concert truly showed me the love within and for the city and how much the artist Drake cares for his hometown. Amazing artists such as The Weeknd, TLC, J. Cole, P.Diddy, Ma$e, A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, and many, more all came out to support Drake, celebrate the city, and create an unforgettable night.

My favourite Toronto memory was an afternoon in Kensington that I can only describe as the best smorgasbord of a day I’ve ever had. I had a few beauts in from Montreal that didn’t really know each other or the city and we met up with my best friends in Toronto that also hadn’t spent a lot of time together either. We spent the afternoon exploring the best parts of Kensington – tastings at the cheese shop, shopping the vintage boutiques for unearthed gems, boozing on the various patios and snacking on delicious chip-crusted fish and chips and wood oven-cooked pizza slices.

Spending a perfect summer day with a group of friends sailing around lake Ontario with the awesome view of the city in the background. Having a picnic and feeling the breeze as the sun glinted off of the CN Tower. Perfection…

I was once walking along the beach on Centre Island and came across this little stage set up on the beach itself, surrounded by lanterns. People were sitting in the sand, listening to an indie band playing. It was the coziest atmosphere, almost familial! It felt like I was spending a moment miles away from Toronto… All Caps is definitely a festival to discover…

Few days in the Toronto calendar compare to the home opener – be it the Jays, Raptors, Leafs or Toronto FC. We’re a sports city, one of the best in North America… even if our teams’ records don’t quite reflect that. I’ll always remember the excitement surrounding Toronto FC’s first kick-off of the season at BMO Field; there’s something about the atmosphere surrounding that particular sport that makes a perfectly sunny (yes, it’s happened in March) afternoon at the stadium – that view! – following a few hours of bar-hopping on King West quintessentially Toronto.

My favourite Toronto memory is that everyone I know and everyone reading this right now is a part of our city’s history. My top TO memory is evolving every day as we shape this city, create the lives that others only dream of, and build new memories. When I look back at living in Toronto I’m going to remember that I was fortunate enough to live in a city where anything is possible and that living life to the fullest isn’t just possible – it’s encouraged and expected.”
