We recently ventured to the suburbs – 10 Aspen Stone Blvd to be precise – to check out A Ladybug and Cafe, which has been creating a buzz amongst suburbanites and urbanites alike. With the charm of a European style bistro, they have strong community values, using natural and certified organic ingredients from local suppliers. Of course it doesn’t hurt that they have a resident Master Pastry Chef with over 40 years of experience.
If you are coming in to dine, the concept is pseudo-cafeteria style. You order at the counter from either the items in the display case or off of the menu on the back wall and then choose a table. When your meal is ready, they will bring it out to you as you sit and gab with friends.
The breakfast menu ranges from Belgian waffles topped with seasonal fruit and rich Bernard Callebaut chocolate to smoked salmon and mixed baby greens savoury crepes paired with cranberry mustard. On weekends, they also offer their customer favourite; eggs benedict, made from free range, organic eggs.
No time to dine in? To-go options are available and they have an amazing selection of pastries and baked goods. Their signature lemon tarts with smooth lemon curd and hand-crafted shortbread crust have earned a reputation in the city. Many of their breads are made using a technique handed down through the family since the Second World War, which allows them to create great bread without the use of yeast. It lets the taste of the organic flour’s natural minerals shine through, without the interference of foreign flavours. You can literally taste the difference.
While there, you’ll want to grab yourself a specialty coffee. Their baristas make top-notch espresso, pour-over, and French-press coffees for patrons in search of a caffeine fix. Note that they also offer catering services, a great option for your next client event.
