Must Try: Teatro

Located at Olympic Plaza in Calgary’s downtown theatre district and housed in the historic Dominion Bank Building built in 1911, Teatro brings Calgary diners some of the most delicious food the city has to offer. Serving contemporary Mediterranean cuisine strongly rooted in Italian tradition, and paired with an award-winning wine cellar strongly rooted in the wines of Italy and Bordeaux, the name Teatro means theatre in Italian, and this ristorante has provided a unique dining experience in Calgary for nearly two decades.

Teatro is a hot spot for Calgary’s corporate crowd at lunchtime; it’s not unusual to see the room full of well-dressed YP’s discussing work as they nibble on pasta. With such a great space – the main dining room is elegant and sophisticated with large windows, high ceilings and many of the original architectural details such as rich wall tapestry accents Italian marble throughout – it’s a no brainer when it comes to celebratory dinners.

The lounge, located along one side of the room can be reserved for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and tapas for those who want a bit more of an informal event. However, the space lends itself often for private events; anything from weddings to milestones and corporate events.

Looking for something a little more secluded? The Opera Room, their private dining room, is an impressive space with original architecture and grand 18-foot ceilings with an ambience remains intimate. Completely separate from the main dining room, the Opera Room is accessible by its own entrance on 1st Street SE and comes complete with its own bar and set of washrooms.

Of course it’s no secret that the key to every great meal is the quality of the ingredients. At Teatro, ingredients are sourced from local and organic producers whenever possible. Local products and producers include: Northridge Farm beef, Driview Farms lamb, Broek Acres Farm pork, and Fairwinds Farm goat cheese and yogurt. Their breads and pastries are baked fresh daily in their in-house bakery.

Their internationally-sourced ingredients are chosen with extreme care, such as the extra virgin olive oil from owner Dario Berloni’s family olive groves in Italy, finishing salt from Italy and Brittany, and fine imported cheeses from all over the world.

Whether it is an intimate dinner for two, a quick bite before a show, or a celebratory event, Teatro is a great place to celebrate the more delicious things in life.
