Must Try: Red Fish

Red Fish Restaurant is a brand spankin’ new joint on College Street that’s hook, line, and sinker when it comes to sustainable seafood. Started by David Friedman and Jaime Duran – these two know fish, having met at Ossington mainstay Fishbar – Red Fish is all Ocean Wise, all the time.

The restaurant takes over the former Mitzi’s space, with a warm and inviting atmosphere outlaid by minimal decor, dark woods, and pops of red. Conscientious dining awaits once you sidle on up to a table and peer down at the menu…

Local pickerel, Artic Char, sea bream, tuna… most any fish that can be fished sustainably and isn’t under the threat of being overfished. The dishes are well composed, and let the seafood sing while the ingredients fused in play the bass (as in percussion, not the fish). Try the ceviche, or maybe the Thai inspired soup. The menu will likely rotate as fish seasons change.

Red Fish is a valiant effort in ponybacking a trend toward everything we eat being environmentally sound. While Ocean Wise doesn’t make it easy – but really, should eating this conscientious be that easy? – David and Jaime have done a masterful job in offering what many restaurants can’t.
