If you are a lover of authentic French pastries, Itza Bakeshop is worth a visit. Located in the historic Devinish Building on 17 Avenue (#111, 908 – 17th Ave SW), this locally owned bakery has all sorts of treats to choose from.
Owner and operator Alex Chan is a well-accomplished pastry chef in Calgary who has worked at several food establishments throughout the city and garnered a fantastic reputation.
The space is small but playful, with brightly coloured walls, large windows and a collection of Chan’s achievements displayed on the walls. Open from 9am to 6pm Tuesday through Saturday, Alex is a staple in the shop, busily preparing the fresh and delicious pastries that line the shelves. We recommend trying the croissants or the apricot pastry. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, aka a quick lunch, Itza also offers quiches and sandwiches.
Having garnered a bit of a cult following, Itza products are now also carried at several outlets in Calgary, including Old School Emporium and Kawa Espresso Bar. For those of you in the market for treats for a special occasion, Itza does custom order cakes and wedding cakes.
