Taking over the space that until recently housed Boiler House, El Catrin is a stunning example of what Toronto-class (not world-class) restaurants should be. First, the decor. Could it be anymore captivating? The patio is massive, with hints of Mexican charm that are subdued enough to negate any in-your-face cacophony. Inside, a beautiful and street-art-styled mural draws the eye as you sit in the room. Every element was carefully curated to give a Mexican aesthetic without over doing it. Good job, Munge Leung!

The food is authentic Mexican – the chef hails from Mexico though his pedigree is impressive and even boasts Cordon Bleu experience – and different than many of the other restaurants in this vain that have been opening as of late. The tacos are #TD4. The guacamole is stupid good. And the tostadas? Come on! Everything is noshable.

Finally, the cocktails. With a stunning selection of about 85 tequilas, these guys know their margaritas. (Might be the best in the city.) The mezcal cocktails are tasty, too, and have that spice you only get from premium mezcals.

El Catrin is el loco… and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
