Must Try: Double Zero

Double Zero (00) has brought traditional Neapolitan pizza and cuisine to Calgary’s core, and after a few months open, has already cemented an insatiable following. Located on 3rd St and 7th Ave, it’s smack dab in the middle of downtown, talk about an ideal destination.

It’s not unusual to be greeted by the owners and their friendly demeanour has cultivated a vibe that is fun and inviting. The minute you walk through the doors and down the stairs (it’s a below street level restaurant) your mouth starts salivating in anticipation of the delicious food. The name Double Zero is in reference to the type of flour used to make the dough. “In Italy they classify flour as 1, 0, or 00. Double Zero is the most highly refined flour providing the perfect base for the pizza dough – thin, crisp, and slightly chewy.”

With such delicious nosh Calgary’s corporate crowd has come flocking and lunchtime is packed. It’s not unusual to see a group of well-dressed YPs dining on delicious pizza while they sip a glass of wine…or three.

But there is more to the menu than just pizza. They have great starters such as meatballs and fennel and orange salad. As for entrees, they feature local producers such as Spragg Farms and Spring Creek Ranch.

One of the most exciting things Double Zero offers is a fantastic happy hour special. From 3 to 6pm, Monday to Friday, house wine, beer and appetizers are all on for $5. This is perfect for the financially savvy young professional (or the gluttonous one). Whether it’s an afternoon meeting or after work libations you can enjoy great food and drink without breaking the bank.

Of course it’s not just about daytime eats here, this is definitely a place to consider when planning an evening out. With a 220-seat room, they can definitely accommodate any size group.

Whether it’s lunch with your boss, an afternoon meeting, or a full evening out, Double Zero is one of the best spots in downtown Calgary. If you haven’t been, get thee to thy Zeros.
