Anejo Restaurant (#2, 2116 – 4 St SW) has opened its doors on 4th Street in the neighborhood of Mission, bringing young professionals the best selection of tequila in the city and delicious Mexican-inspired fare.
The room is spacious and eclectic with a modern Mexican flair – one wall showcases an impressive collection of Mexican crosses. Offering several different rooms within the space, Anejo boasts tall ceilings with a massive skylight, and walls that feature exposed brick walls. Their piece de resistance, though, is definitely their impressive selection of premium tequilas that are on display behind the bar.
The team at Anejo took their time researching and connecting with producers to learn more about tequila, and brought back their learnings, collection of tequilas, and tequila culture to Calgary. They showcase tequila as a slow sipping alcohol that should be savoured, instead of devoured.
True tequila, a distilled beverage made from the juices of the blue agave plant first planted and harvested by the Aztecs, must adhere to strict guidelines. In fact, Mexican laws dictate that tequila can only be produced in the state of Jalisco and limited regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.
Pop in for lunch or dinner; we suggest trying the tacos. You can order one, three or six, and mix and match between short rib, pork, red snapper or chicken. Of course no Mexican feast is complete without guacamole, and Anejo has taken the experience up a notch by making it tableside for guests.
