Must Attend: AndroidTO, October 17

Local one-day conferences can be a great way for young professionals to network and gain new skills without breaking the bank on travel or expensive entrance costs. But while Toronto is awash with digital conferences, few fully deliver on what they promise in knowledge or networking. Local one-day conferences can be a great way for young professionals to network and gain new skills without breaking the bank on travel or expensive entrance costs. But while Toronto is awash with digital conferences (I should know – I ran one myself) few fully deliver on what they promise in knowledge or networking. AndroidTO, taking place tomorrow at the Scotiabank Theatre, is one of the notable exceptions: a well-run event timed perfectly as Android transitions from mobile OS to the platform running our cars and wearable tech.

Now in its fourth year, AndroidTO has expanded from a developer-focused event to full-throated conference, featuring dedicated design, business and gaming tracks to attract young professionals from across the office. The speaker lineup features compelling speakers across the board, from mobile luminary Rob Woodbridge to representatives from some of the hottest Canadian and international startups: Shopify, 500px, and Square. Tumblr’s Chris Haseman reprises his keynote speaker role from last year, and is a can’t-miss for the way he presents lessons learned in the microblogging trenches with wit and candour.

AndroidTO is once again organized by noted Toronto developers BNOTIONS and Dx3 Canada, which also runs Canada’s largest digital trade show. The Scotiabank Theatre mays seem an unlikely choice to host an event, but is actually perfectly suited for a digital conference housing over 600 people, with Wi-Fi, comfy seats in front of large screens, and a foyer featuring sponsor booths with buttered popcorn and other treats. Dx3 is known for its attention to detail and doesn’t disappoint, with fun conference activities and over $1 million in prizes for attendees.

AndroidTO takes place at the Scotiabank Theatre, Thursday October 17th. Doors open at 8am. Go here for schedule and registration information.
