Moustache Season: Are you ready for Movember?

Mo Bros, it’s that time of year again, so shape up and get ready for the moustache season that is Movember. For those of you who have been completely disconnected these past few years and for some reason haven’t heard of Movember, it’s an annual event when men all over the world decide to sprout a moustache for the month of November in order to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer.

The Movember scene is gearing up already with Mo parties and events planned throughout Canada and the globe for the before-winter-hits month, and we’ve taken the liberty of bringing you the need-to-knows for the hairy weeks ahead.

Rules of Movember
If you’re getting involved and saying goodbye to shaving cream this November, there are a few rules you’ll need to abide. For starters, once you’ve registered, you must start the 1st of Movember with a clean-shaven face. (No pre-campaign stubble or growth.) For the entire month of Movember, you must grow and groom a moustache – goes without saying, we know. Your moustache must be a true ‘stache: No joining your mo to side burns (this will be considered a beard), and no joining of handlebars to your chin (this will be considered a goatee). Finally, and potentially most importantly, each Mo Bro must carry and conduct himself with the confidence and candor of a true country gentleman.

Moustache Style Guide
The Trucker
This iconic moustache personifies the ultimate bad boy and has been sported by countless celebrities and sports stars over the years, including Major League‘s Clu Haywood, Nick Cave, and Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. It’s a hard one to maintain, but if you’re in search of the wow-factor, then look no further than the Trucker this Movember.

The Wisp
The wisp is a fashion statement in and of itself, and what better person to don this style than (former) fashion icon, John Galliano. Believe it or not, his moustache has received such adulation that it has a dedicated Facebook page. (It may only have 12 likes so far, but that’s probably a good start for a man who has experienced such a dramatic fall from grace this past year.)

The Box Car
A good solution for the Mo virgins among you, as it requires less attention than other styles like the Trucker or Wisp. Irish bad boy Colin Farrell provides a good example of the rough and ready Box Car. Although, he may be slightly breaking the rules with his goatee connection. (Given that it’s Colin Farrell, we’ll let it slip though.)

The Major
How could a list of Moustache styles be compiled without mentioning the original celebrity Mo Bro, Tom Selleck. Through thick and thin, Selleck has stuck with his Major and it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon.

The Handlebar
The good dependable handlebar has been favoured by movie star Mel Gibson on occasion and is a familiar feature on comic invention Borat. For those of you that are so inclined, a benefit to this style is that it is sure to keep those upper lips nice and warm during the bitter winters.

The Undercover Brother
The ultimate full-bodied moustache – best worn by king of rock Freddie Mercury – is a hard one to pull off. It’s possibly best left to those with darker and fuller facial hair, but if you’re adamant to make a statement this Movember, then get some Miracle Grow on your face come November 1st.
