Today’s Notable Young Professional is Moses McIntee, Mixologist at Toronto hot spot The Good Son. We talked to him about his inspiration, why he loves working 70-80 hours a week, and what advice he would share with other young professionals…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I create and execute the beverage menu for The Good Son. I come in early, leave late, mentor, teach, coach, and insist on the highest standards of beverage execution on the planet.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I work at The Good Son because I believe in the chef, Chef Vittorio Colacitti; I bartend because I love it. I work 70 to 80 hours a week because I believe that no matter what you do in life, you should aspire to greatness.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part is beverage conceptualization. I am in love with learning and working with new ingredients, or presenting common ones in a new way. The most challenging part? Those who don’t care about doing it right.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
When your entire life revolves around your trade. This is a blessing and a curse, and also a sign that you’re doing your work properly.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
It’s a toss-up. Either owning a bar and continuing my work in this field, or on a farm, making produce for other inspired people to play with.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
A major issue when I started was being a male bartender. I overcame it by studying and working hard, and becoming good at my trade.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Success is getting to do what you love. Money is a by-product of being good at it.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
Being asked to run all of the bars at the Ritz-Carlton.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Work harder than everybody else. With a bit of luck, and simple science, the cream always rises to the top.

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
Mercatto because it is always consistent.

When you’re not working, how do you love to spend your “me” time?
On the farm shooting, hunting, and doing whatever my fiancée wants to do!

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
My favourite place to travel is throughout Canada because it’s my home and I can’t get enough of it.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
Miserere Mei Deus.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
Cooking or farming… or perhaps teaching history.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I support local homeless people and initiatives. I think it’s important because they are members of my community.

What to you is notable?
Anything done at the highest level.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
Android.
