Montreal Weekender: September 12 through 15, 2013

THURSDAY
Spend time today checking out Les Escales Improbables de Montreal in the Quays of the Old-Port of Montreal. This year, the event will take place over three nights in three venues in the heart of Montreal. Les Escales Improbables de Montreal festival offers present-day arts, drawing on creation, contemporary art, and strolling outside the conventional structures and repetition of artist representations.?It’s an event where the viewer is invited take part, not only limited to a consuming behavior, but getting in touch with the audience on their social and human side.

If you happen to be in NYC this week, go and support our buddies and party movers Saintwoods at their private rooftop party at the funky Westway in West Village, a spot reminiscent of Saturday Night Fever… the hipster edition of course. With their crew Jay London, Myfrienderic, Moody Jones and Groll Street, this night will start at 11 and go untik, well, it’s New York, so you never know. Wear your coloured socks, kids.

FRIDAY

Things will go fast, so make your way down ASAP. 

It’s Comiccon time! As with most other comic conventions, the Montreal Comiccon offers a select range of activities, exhibits, and other attractions. Get ready for a large Dealers Room, an Artists Alley, a costume contest, a trading-card games area, guest panels, film screenings, guest photo sessions and a Masquerade. Special guests this year include Bret “Hitman” Hart, Carrie Fisher of the original Star Wars, Jillian Anderson and many, many more. Get your best costume ready and join the fun!

It’s back! Fight For Charity 3 and this time it’s a Four man tournament for the championship belts! Since last time was such a great turnout, the Holiday inn has donated their large hall! There will be dj’s, large screens, ring girls and of course special guests. All proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Montreal Childrens Hospital.


SATURDAY
Need some inspiration? There’s no better place to get that than a TEDxMontreal event. This year’s theme is ‘Innovation through human connections’ and will be held at the Société des arts Technologiques. The speakers from all walks of life and industries are ready to impart their wisdom with Montreal’s YPs in what will be a series of riveting and inspiring 18-minute speeches.

Avenue du Mont-Royal is full of small shops filled with quality and deliciousness to satisfy the tastes of foodies and lovers of authentic flavours and local produce. Starting today, the Avenue will be transformed for a second year for Gourmet Avenue with the participation of 27 businesses that will offer the public tastings of homemade products and offer the opportunity to meet with local food producers and artisans. A great way to discover Mont-Royal if you haven’t already.

SUNDAY
In honour of Mexican Independence Day, the Royal Merchant is hosting “El Grito: Viva La Independencia.” You are invited to sample their Mexican-inspired menu, created by the very talented Aldo Loud from Restaurant L’Orignal, or taste their Mexican-inspired cocktails conceived by resident mixologist Brynley Leach. Oye!

Our local favorite pub, Burgundy Lion, is hosting their first whisky tasting of the season today at 6:30pm. The menu includes a taste of the islands with some interesting expressions and, as always, the price is $35 and includes some bites and our whiskies. Spots are filling up fast, so book yourself a reservation. Don’t forget to leave the car keys at home!
