Montreal Weekender: October 16 through 19, 2014

THURSDAY
We need to kick it off tonight with the big game. You know what we are talking about, Habs fans. It’s the matchup against our eternal nemesis, the Boston Bruins, and if you missed out list of where to watch the game around the city, make sure you brush up on the what and where here.

So maybe Cavalli hasn’t really been on your radar lately but you know when the team behind Matinee take over a place, nothing but epic good times ensue. So come and indulge in a culinary experience and party the night away at Cavalli. It’s simple: Beautiful people, a delicious tasting menu created by Cavalli’s top chefs at $35, and amazing music. A great way to celebrate the Habs winning – because that’s what they will do.

Tonight, NOMAD, a Montreal content agency that creates transmedia narratives, and Telefilm Canada invite everyone to celebrate Canadian talent at the NOMAD LIVE event held at the Dôme du Festival at the Quartier des Spectacles. Participants will have the opportunity to watch an immersive film created by NOMAD based on interviews and other moments shot behind the scenes at the Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC). The dance troupe Human Playground, singer-songwriter Jesse Mac Cormack, and interdisciplinary artist Johnny Ranger (aka Mind Roots) will all perform at the same time under the creative directorship of Moment Factory founder Jason Rodi.

FRIDAY
Old Montreal’s Restaurant Communion is celebrating their third anniversary in style. Of course. The evening will be filled with a live DJ, welcome cocktails, an oyster bar, appetizers, and a menu that will let you discover the talents of their chef, Chris Heppner.

Time to get sexy and sizzle! The Montreal Burlesque Festival is celebrating their sixth anniversary with Scarlett James & Montreal Burlesque Productions. You are invited to experience three exceptional events over three nights of burlesque and cabaret done the authentic way. So dress up, glam out, and get sharp, as you are part of the show. You heard us.

Out goes Royal Phoenix Bar, in bounces the Ping Pong Club. This new concept hits the scene where Royal Phoenix left off, except you can enjoy the game playing table tennis. Boozy milkshakes and smoothies fill the drink list with a mini snack bar menu to complement your big win… or loss. A first on the Montreal scene and certified notable.

SATURDAY
We had the opportunity and privilege to be part of the kickstarter campaign for local designers De La Commune, and today they’re asking for your support. You can view the whole collection, snack on salted caramel macaroons, sip some mimosas, and place your pledge in person to help them take their Canada-made collection to the next level. Receive a gift if you pledge over $25 just as a little bonus.

Here’s a fantastic cause to join with your loved ones: Each year in Montreal and Quebec City, families, friends, co-workers and local and national corporations come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada’s (LLSC’s) Light The Night Walk to deliver help and hope to those affected by blood cancers. The Light The Night Walk is an evening filled with inspiration, solidarity and hope. Everyone gathers at twilight to walk with illuminated lanterns; red for supporters, white for survivors and gold in memory of a loved one.

What’s better than a good movie during rainy weather? Not much, except some Nutella and popcorn. The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma is at your disposal today showcasing movies of all genres from offbeat flicks to crowd-pleasers and daringly innovative productions.

SUNDAY
Our favorite donut spot in the city is celebrating their two-year anniversary with… donuts! Come by Leche and enjoy some festive Hawaiian-style cocktails and food. These ladies know how to feed you, so be prepared and come with an empty tummy. For real.

It must be our lucky week because the boys from Matinee are throwing yet another soiree with their third edition of “Pretty In Pink.” A collaboration with the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, a portion of proceeds from the sales of food and alcohol will be donated to support breast cancer awareness month. The chefs of Suite 701 were praised with the quality of food served last year, and this year is gearing up to be no different. Matinee Brunch’s resident DJs Toddy Flores and Danny Torrence will bring down the house with old-school R’n’B, hip-hop and everyone’s favourite house tracks. Make your reservations and come brunch for a cause.
