Montreal Weekender: October 11 through 14, 2012

THURSDAY
When a tight-knit group of Montreal jazz men combined ideas, they decided to launch an event in their own vision, a custom-made festival that would push creative expression in Montreal. Without any means of financing but the pure love and support from our local Montreal music community, L’OFF Jazz Festival started.

Now 13 years later, L’Off has become a staple in Montreal’s cultural life. Tonight is the opening and you can enjoy the trumpet playing sounds of Franco-Ontarian composer Joe Sullivan, who will present several new compositions in a musical tribute to his musicians. A not-to-be missed night for all you jazzy cats!

A great charity event is also taking place tonight presented by Stikeman Elliott in collaboration with Power Corporation: The Fall Fling!A festive and lavish cocktail reception, followed by a live auction, will be held on the second floor of Rosalie restaurant starting at 6:30pm. There will be an entire new concept featuring a red carpet, photographers snapping away like the paparazzi, a cocktail bar, lounge, food stations and of course the perfect setup for networking.

The ambiance will be provided the musical genius of DJ Stephane Belfort. Proceeds from the event will be used to finance the purchase of endoscopic medical equipment for the Radio-Oncology Department at the Jewish General Hospital. Places are very limited and only 300 tickets are being sold. Maison Publique, the highly anticipated foodie brainchild of chef Derek Dammann and international celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, is now open to the public. Dammann is in full control of the menu, offering a British pub fare theme set in a space that is meant to become a home away from home type of hang out with a very cool open kitchen concept. The reviews thus far have been unanimous: cozy, warm and very welcoming. Tonight is the perfect time to go check out this British-style tavern in the Plateau (although fish & chips are apparently not on the menu) and experience what the buzz has been all about. No website is available as of yet, so go visit them at 4720 Marquette on corner of Guilford.

Everyone and anyone is encouraged to register and fundraise – we know we are!

SUNDAY
Remember ska? That trumpet, saxophone punk-like music you loved and dance to in high school? Well its back in the form of Montreal’s Ska Festival. The festival provides many different opportunities, whether it be to bring international acts to Montreal to give them a glimpse into Quebec culture, give local up and comers the chance to share the stage with their idols, or give the public the opportunity to see all this play out at the festival and discover special talents from around the world. What better way to experience this than with a ska breakfast? Head over to Ye Olde Orchard for a delicious eggs and bacon breakfast to the sounds of Mitch Girio (acoustic set). Starting at 11am and going until 3 pm, there can’t be a better way to enjoy your morning coffee than this.

The Festival De Nouveau Cinema is a great way to enjoy the cold fall days and nights. For its 41st edition, the FNC is excited to bring in some new changes, including Air France and Mercedes-Benz as major partners and two new venues, Theatre Outremont and an all-new PHI Centre amongst other things. The festival is a three-day gathering of the up and comers in the movie industry. Around 300 films from across the world, events, retrospectives and master classes will be taking place during the FNC. Not to mention an interactive installation in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles, a true beauty. The schedule has something for everyone so we strongly suggest visiting their site for the lineup. It’s a perfect end to a perfect weekend – don’t forget your scarves!
