Montreal Weekender: November 13 through 16, 2014

We’re mid-Movember.

But there’s no way we’re letting you only go halfway with the next four days. We want you more committed to a good time than Burt Reynolds’ perfect ‘stache.

So even though it’s only getting colder outside, we see that as a reason to heat things up inside. Which means we’re here to make sure you’ve got an iron in every one of the most notable fires in town.

The weekend starts now, Montreal.

THURSDAY

Get your bowties ready YPs, because for a second exciting year, The Antonopoulos Group and PROCURE are spearheading the fight against prostate cancer with “A Bow Tie Affair”. Taking place at the Hôtel Nelligan’s elegant ballroom, you can expect some dapper socializing, a silent auction, a live DJ, open bar, and delicious food stations.  Did we mention 100% of proceeds go directly to fighting prostate cancer?

“There are no rules, there are no brushes, just my mind, my hands, and my paint.” Got your attention? Then make sure to pop by Victoria Park to catch Randee Crudo’s solo exhibition.

We’re just as sick of our wardrobe as you are. The solution? Ponyride Distribution’s fall sample sale featuring brand like Rails, Designers Remix, Pink Stitch, Yosi Samra, Darling, Charli, Swedish Hasbeens, and more. Cash only, kids.

FRIDAY

As the winter days slowly creep up on us we couldn’t be any happier that The North Face has decided to open a 6000 sq. ft. location in the heart of downtown Montreal at 1247 Ste. Catherine St., W. This weekend be sure to stop by their new location to check out the retail spaced filled with everything you need to be active and to enjoy the outdoors. Friday through Sunday, between 12pm and 5pm, customers will have the chance to check out the Never Stop Exploring Airstream, which will feature a photo booth, free snacks, warm drinks, and a gift with any purchase of $100 or more.

Fundraiser season continues with the world-acclaimed dance group Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal. Usine C will be host to BJM Contact, a daring and festive fundraising event with a strong artistic flair. Here’s your invitation to dance through the night with BJM dancers to the beat of Montreal’s best djs while savouring the most scrumptious gourmet pleasures of the culinary artists participating. Can we be any more persuasive? Didn’t think so.

If you still haven’t experienced “Warhol Mania”, get in line. Seriously, we’re just preparing you for the inevitable. Grab a latte, dress warmly (you might be outside for a bit), and get ready to indulge in Andy’s genius.

“You’re gonna rire”. Yes you are. Sugar Sammy will be capturing the essence of what it is to be a Montrealer by jumping from one language to the other in the same show, in the same routine, and sometimes in the same sentence. Franglais anyone?

 SATURDAY

Did you know that on November 15th you can set up your own pop-up restaurant in your alleyway, your living room, or your own backyard? Yes, really. Restaurant Day is an international food carnival where people are invited to open their dream restaurant for one day. Occurring each season in cities across the globe, Restaurant Day encourages participants to choose the format and location of their pop-up restaurant – and no idea is too wild.

The king of pop is not dead. At least not tonight. The Michael Jackson Experience, a live concert and tribute to the world’s greatest pop artist is taking over the Rialto Theatre. This amazing show features Bishop Soul’s stunning vocals, incredible dance moves, breathtaking looks, and replica costumes. You have to bring your own Jerry curl though.

Get bright. Get loud. There’s a Brazialian Carnival in town. YAD Montreal is hosting a “Carnival of Colours” at the Science Centre transporting you all the way to Brazil. No plane ticket needed. Leave your little black dresses at home and let the Caipirinhas flow, this will be one spicy fundraiser.

SUNDAY

“I will remember you. Will you remember me?” No we are not reminiscing about Dawson’s Creek, we’re talking about watching multi-platinum Canadian singer-songwriter and Grammy Award-winner, Sarah McLachlan in person when she returns to Montreal in support of her eighth studio album, Shine On. She’ll be gracing the stage at the Theatre St Denis so you can get up close and personal, just how all-live shows should be.

Writers, journalists, art nerds behold, Expozine, Montreal’s enormous small press fair is back. Your dreams have come true and now you can swarm the massive amounts of books, zines, graphic novels, alternative comics, artists’ books, and the uncategorizable. Some 300 exhibitors, publishers, authors, and artists, in both French and English, will be present. Sunday Funday, right?
