Montreal Weekender: June 20 through 23, 2013

THURSDAY
Old Montreal’s new sake bar and izakaya, KYO Bar Japonais, will have its official exclusive grand opening tonight hosted by yours truly! The new Izakaya, situated in Old Montreal’s Le Place d’Armes Hôtel & Suites, will unveil its menu of Japanese fare and extensive sake list. The beautiful space hosts an impressively-stocked bar that includes over 25 varieties of sake, and veteran sushi chef Terrence “Ding” Tinghas has crafted a menu that embraces the best of Japanese comfort food, but with an air of sophistication. Join us and a guest list full of our city’s top YPs for an exclusive evening of cocktails while sampling the mouth-watering menu with entertainment and a live DJ.

The “Badfellas” are back at it again – those good Catholic boys gone bad are performing at Theatre Ste. Catherine! It’s live comedy at its finest, featuring the three bad boys of comedy including one of our personal faves, Guido Cocomello, fresh off shows in Atlantic City and NYC,  and star of Vittorio Rossi’s critically acclaimed play ‘Paradise by the River’; Mark Debonis, winner of this year’s “Great Canadian Laugh Off” and Just For Laughs festival; and Massimo, Just for Laughs national Homegrown Comedy Competition representing Montreal. These shows get packed, so act fast and get ready for some serious jokes.

FRIDAY
Dreaming of faraway beaches and surfing? Check out Storm Surfers 3D, an epic, character-driven adventure documentary following two best friends on their quest to hunt down and ride the biggest and most dangerous waves in Australia. Aussie tow-surfing legend Ross Clarke-Jones and two-time world champion Tom Carroll enlist the help of surf forecaster Ben Matson, and together they track and chase giant storms across the Great Southern Ocean. Watch this amazing documentary at the beautiful PHI Centre and dream away.

Following last year’s super successful Red Bull Solstice party, this year its back and taking over Terrasse Bonsecours. The party takes place on the longest day of the year, when the summer solstice is at its peak… hence the name. What’s in store this time around? A percussion flash mob, DJs A-Rock and Shaydakiss rocking out all night, with the finalists of Red Bull Thre3style competition also assisting on the turntables. We have a feeling this will be a wild one.
