Montreal Weekender: June 12 through 15, 2014

THURSDAY

MURAL festival, the free art festival that aims to celebrate creativity and democratize urban art, kicks off today. MURAL will bring together artistic activities that are linked with urban art and graffiti painting, sculpture and installations, dance, music, film and performance. The second edition of the festival will take place from June 12 to 15 on the famous Boulevard Saint-Laurent in Montreal. Don’t forget to check out their block party today on Saint-Laurent and Prince-Arthur, a long afternoon party featuring fresh cocktails with hip-hop, electro, EDM and trap flavors – murals included, of course.

Another art-related festival has taken over Montreal. The FIMA (Festival International Montreal en Arts) is the greatest open air art gallery in eastern Canada. The BoulevArt will expand over a one-kilometer stretch of Montreal’s central artery, Sainte-Catherine Street, offering festivalgoers a unique opportunity to meet artists from various backgrounds and to purchase artworks directly from the artists. But more than an open-air exhibition, FIMA features short film screenings, multimedia performances, immersive installations, live painting, craft work demonstrations and a series of multidisciplinary performances.

As if Thursday couldn’t get any cooler, the 21st edition of Montreal’s Mondial de la bière, America’s most important international beer festival, goes until June 15 at Palais des Congrès de Montreal and its terrace, l’Esplanade. More than 100,000 festivalgoers are expected for this unique event, which features beers from here and afar where you will be able to learn, taste, share and network with the brewers and the industry’s professionals. Cheers, we say.

FRIDAY
Where can you find Karl Wolf, Aaron Carter, Down with Webster about 28 other artists surrounded by roller coaster? Gravity Festival is the answer. So some of the musical talents might not be your cup of tea, but seriously, this is just going to be pure, stupid fun. Theme Park Rides, dance mix 97 performers (you know you owned those cd’s!) and all the cotton candy you can handle. Adults just wanna have fun.

Presented by CNW Telbec and Tangerine, the summer #PRmixer will take place today alongside the Mural Festival on the Jargo terrace. This is a great opportunity for you to network amongst urban art. Mural’s PR team will be demonstarting a short presentation on this innovative festival and how it has become one of the great events in our city after only one edition. Drinks, art and more drinks.

In the mood to flirt a little under the stars? The Main’s Le Belmont is hosting a devilish dance night on their epic terrace. Many DJs will be igniting hearts featuring Matteo Grondini, Janek Bishop & Alix and funky Falz. No, this isn’t a singles party. Just a good excuse to give your dancefloor neighbour a good wink and boogie

Yes, this tiny corner of paradise officially opens at Parc Jean-Drapeau today. You can lounge in the sun or take part in nautical activities, beach volleyball or open-water swimming. SUNDAY
It’s Father’s Day, so make this Sunday special. Why not check out the FIFA World Cup over a few beers and bonding at spots like the Burgundy Lion, Bishop and Bagg, or Champs Bar? The choices are plenty, so make it a fun day out with papa bear.

Or spend the day exploring The Montreal Fringe Festival, a celebration of independent theatre, dance and music. The festival features around 100 companies from Montreal and the world who will give over 700 performances. With activities running from noon until midnight at various indoor venues, an outdoor stage and a beer tent, there is plenty to choose from.

It’s the big night. Will Castle Black stand? Can our favorite hero, Tyrion, survive? So many questions yet to be answered before the season finale of Game of Thrones tonight. Here’s the notable part: You can experience it all on a big screen. Three of Montreal’s movie theaters will be showing the grand finale including Cineplex Odeon Forum, Colossus Laval and Colisée Kirkland. Let the battles begin.
