Montreal Weekender: June 1 through 3, 2012

One week to go until the F1 madness begins and most Montrealers are preparing for days and nights of very little sleep. Speaking from experience, you will need as much rest as you can get with the overabundance of activities happening here next week.

So let’s take it a little easier this weekend and, instead of club hopping, we will make a few stops at some engaging events around the city.

Being a huge sushi fan, one of our ultimate go-to spots is Tokyo Sushi, and Friday night is an ideal night to pop by this little gem.

Tokyo Sushi is located in the Old Port. The food is extremely tasty, service is attentive, and the ambiance is very cozy. Two of my choice dishes are the spicy maki and salmon teriyaki, but the menu is filled with savoury plates. It’s on the pricier side, but the freshness and taste really allow for it, especially if you want good quality seafood.

Cirque Du Soleil has created another world of fantasy and imagination with their new “Amaluna” show. The beautiful spectacle takes place in the Quays of the Old Port. Amaluna is the Cirque’s 32nd production and is their most feminine, offering matriarchy, Goddess lore, mother-daughter relations and girl-to-woman transitions as central themes. So far, reviewers have been raving about the visual aspect of the show and, judging from previous productions, we wouldn’t doubt this is a feast for the eyes.

Saturday plays host to two very completely different events. A Night To Remember benefiting the Alzheimer’s Society of Montreal takes place at the WAVE (Complexe Dompark). The night will be filled with dancing and networking amongst Montreal’s young and dynamic professionals in an opulent atmosphere at the Complexe Dompark, featuring Montreal’s top DJs, a premium open bar, oyster shuckers and valet service. Special guests include Louis LeBlanc from the Montreal Canadiens and UFC’s own John “The Bull” Makdessi.

If Rock ‘n Roll music is your cup of vodka soda, then my personal pick of the night goes to the Dandy Warhols concert at the Theater Corona. If you haven’t heard “Bohemian Like You” before, then maybe a little Wikipedia in Garage Rock is necessary. Quirky would best describe this Portland-born band, a guaranteed great live show in the making.

Since Friday and Saturday were a bit more mellow, lets make Sunday fun day.

The MUTEK Festival is taking place, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audio-visual art. Alongside Piknic Electronik, an innovative weekly event that combines the best of hedonism and discovery, a partnership formed. The two forces have combined and are providing a powerhouse of DJs that will take place in the Place de l’Homme in Parc Jean-Drapeau that starts at 2pm and ends…well who knows. DJs include: Benoit & Sergio, Wolf+Lamb, SUPRISE!, The Mole and more. Basking in the sun and dancing; isn’t that a flawless Sunday afternoon formula of joy?
