Montreal Weekender: July 3 through 5, 2014

THURSDAY

Did someone say circus? Let your imagination do the walking when you enter the world of the Montreal Cirque Fest. This mesmerizing spectacle presents more than 100 circus artists from Canada, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and Wales. Indoor and outdoor performances will instantly transport you to places you might have never known existed before. Get your imagination flying. 

Come on down to The Royal Merchant this Thursday for their summer kick-off with old school R&B beats by our friend DJ Nazli Var and special guest bartender Sammy Hammouda shakin’ and stirrin’ things up. Booze. Food. Fun. 

Launching today and going all the way until July 7th, the Valhalla Sound Circus will turn the Quebec wilderness into a haven for bass music aficionados. It’s held in Bryson, Quebec, on the beautiful Paradise grounds, complete with forested areas, bathrooms with showers, underground swimming pool and mountain-y paths connecting to all of Valhalla’s stages, vendors and chill spots. It also features three powerful stages, international headliners, chill spots and much more. Far out, man. 

FRIDAY 

Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion aka The Doggfather will be gracing the stages with his mega swag at the Metropolis tonight as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival. Getting unwillingly high may take place.

If you can’t see him there head over to TIME Supper Club as Snoop will be helping launch TIME’s summer festivitis series with Buffalo David Bitton. Expect fresh raps and beats, a new summer menu, an endless cocktail list and here’s the best part, Time will donate $20 of every meal sold and $5 of every ticket sold to the Million Meals Movement, which helps to feed underprivileged children across the globe. The Montreal street food tradition continues. Come taste Montreal’s best street food every first Friday of the month at Olympic Park’s Esplanade Financière Sun Life. From tacos to raclette, dumplings to pulled pork or lobster sandwiches, tartar to spare ribs and ice cream, the best trucks will be on location in a festive atmosphere with live DJs keeping them company and providing great beats.

SATURDAY

Starting today, Place Jacques-Cartier will be hosting musical brunches every Saturday and Sunday. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy classical music in a charming setting featuring a section of 4 to 6 musicians from the Orchestre Métropolitain while restaurateurs pamper their guests with an original brunch menu.   

The 39th edition of the Carifiesta will take over downtown with its colourful parade. Over 100,000 people are expected to attend this annual carnival where participants and spectators will vibrate and dance to the rhythm of Latin West-Indian and Afro-Caribbean music. The parade will include floats decorated with the colours of the countries being represented, as well as traditional dances and exotic costumes worn by the Carifiesta masqueraders.

Also gracing the stage today is the annual Shakespeare-in-the-Park with the production of Harry the King – The Famous Victories of Henry V, a tale about a rebellious prince who grows up to become one of England’s most revered kings. 

SUNDAY 

The biggest assembly of Montreal’s Italian cars organized by Club Fiat Montreal will be taking over the heart of Little Italy on Rue Dante. From 10am to 3pm, come experience the pleasure of seeing more than 150 Italian and European automobiles lining up along the street.

Discovered in the mid-90s thanks to a debut effort, Urban Hang Suite, and now considered a classic of neo-soul, Maxwell undoubtedly has one of the finest voices of his generation. Descended from greats like Al Green and Marvin Gaye, this major figure in contemporary R&B heads to Montreal for the very first time in his career playing tonight at Salle Wilfird-Pelletier. Girls, get ready to swoon.
